Copper, lead and zinc interactions during phytoextraction using Acer platanoides L.-a pot trial

Miroslaw Mleczek et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different metal concentrations in the cultivation medium on the biomass, plant development, and element uptake of Acer platanoides L. seedlings, and analyze the impact on the distribution and content of Ca, K, Mg, and Na in plant parts with phenols analysis. The results showed that the mixture of two metals resulted in lower leaf biomass but higher major elements content. Leaves cultivated in Pb-5 + Zn-1, Pb-1 + Zn-1, and Pb-1 + Zn-5 experimental systems exhibited specific browning of their edges. The presence and concentration of other elements in the soil also played a significant role in modulating element uptake, total phenolic content, and plant development.

The interplay of ROS and the PI3K/Akt pathway in autophagy regulation

Lakhan Kma et al.

Summary: Autophagy is regulated by the PI3K pathway and Akt protein in response to changing ROS levels. Flavonoids and ionizing radiation can modulate autophagy by affecting PTEN and Akt protein levels, depending on the levels of ROS induced.

Full-coverage regulations of autophagy by ROS: from induction to maturation

Jing Zhou et al.

Summary: Autophagy is a well-conserved recycling process in response to stress, removing oxidized/damaged proteins and organelles to restrict further reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Oxidative regulations occur throughout all stages of autophagy, including induction, nucleation, expansion, maturation, delivery and degradation, as well as gene transcription. Direct thiol oxidation of key proteins and certain chaperone-like proteins play roles in regulating different aspects of autophagy, while ROS can also inhibit autophagy through oxidation of key regulators.

Albicanol inhibits the toxicity of profenofos to grass carp hepatocytes cells through the ROS/PTEN/PI3K/AKT axis

Xuan lihui et al.

Summary: Profenofos (PFF) as an environmental pollutant can induce oxidative stress in hepatocytes, inhibit AKT phosphorylation, and activate mitochondrial apoptosis. Albicanol can significantly reduce the effects of PFF on grass carp hepatocytes by regulating the ROS/PTEN/PI3K/AKT pathway.

Research Progress on Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil of Smelting Sites in China

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: Contamination by heavy metals in China has significant impacts on soil quality, food security, and human health. Mining and smelting activities release massive amounts of heavy metals into the environment, causing severe contamination and hazards to plants, soil organisms, and humans. Pb toxicity is particularly harmful to children. Novel approaches for controlling and reducing heavy metal pollution, such as hydrometallurgy and phytoremediation, offer potential solutions. However, environmentally friendly remediation of contaminated sites remains a challenge.

The antagonistic effect of melatonin on TBBPA-induced apoptosis and necroptosis via PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in swine testis cells

Kexin Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that TBBPA induced cytotoxicity in swine testis cells, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and PTEN expression, and decreased expression of PI3K and AKT. Apoptosis-related and necroptosis-related factors were elevated, while the expression of BCL-2 and Caspase-8 were reduced. Melatonin (MT) inhibited apoptosis and necroptosis in TBBPA-exposed cells and resolved the abnormal expression of related signaling pathways.

Zingerone prevents lead-induced toxicity in liver and kidney tissues by regulating the oxidative damage in Wistar rats

Insha Amin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the protective effect of zingerone in lead-induced toxicity, showing improved ALAD concentration, kidney and liver tissues condition, and decreased oxidative stress levels. Zingerone's anti-oxidant effect and ALAD modulatory property make it a promising candidate for countering lead toxicity.

Pig lung fibrosis is active in the subacute CdCl2 exposure model and exerts cumulative toxicity through the M1/M2 imbalance

Shi Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that subacute CdCl2 exposure leads to lung tissue fibrosis in pigs, resulting in symptoms such as increased Cd content, down-regulation of miR-20a-3p, imbalance of M1/M2, and decreased LXA4/FPR2 content, activating multiple pathways leading to an increase in fibrosis-related factor expression.

Blood lead levels in Peruvian adults are associated with proximity to mining and DNA methylation

Ainash Childebayeva et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals in Cerro de Pasco had higher levels of Pb compared to those in Lima, with males having higher levels than females. Pb was positively associated with hemoglobin, and in Cerro de Pasco, blood Pb decreased with distance from the mine. Associations were identified between Pb and specific genes related to neurological function through differential methylation analysis.

Pollution-Induced Food Safety Problem in China: Trends and Policies

Qianhui Li et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution in China has negatively impacted food safety through issues such as chemical residue, heavy metal pollution, and water contamination. The evolution of pollution-induced food safety policies in China has progressed through four stages, focusing on transitioning from supply-safety balance to prioritizing safety, and moving from multi-agency to integrated management approaches. Collaborations between agricultural and environmental agencies will be crucial in further preventing pollution and maintaining food quality.
