Increased Risk of Anemia in Patients with Asthma

Kiyon Rhew et al.

Summary: Asthma is associated with an increased risk of anemia, especially in patients older than 65 years. Regular monitoring for anemia is recommended for asthma patients.

Causal association between iron deficiency anemia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Yi Wei et al.

Summary: Observational studies have shown an association between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk. This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between IDA and COPD. Bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis revealed that IDA increases the risk of COPD, but there is no evidence of a causal effect of COPD on IDA risk. Therefore, IDA should be considered as a potential therapeutic target in future COPD risk studies.

Correlation of Serum Selenium in Asthma Patients with Severity of the Disorder

Nidhi Girdhar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between serum selenium levels and the severity of asthma. The results showed that asthma patients had lower serum selenium levels compared to healthy individuals, with no significant differences based on gender and age. Patients with a family history of asthma and those using inhalers had slightly lower selenium concentrations.

Summary: The GINA Strategy Report provides clinicians with an evidence-based strategy for asthma management and prevention, with specific recommendations and treatment options for different age groups and severity levels. Regular personalized assessment, treatment of modifiable risk factors, and appropriate medication adjustment and review remain essential for optimizing asthma outcomes.

Allergic Disorders and Risk of Anemia in Japanese Children: Findings from the Japan Environment and Children's Study

Limin Yang et al.

Summary: Previous studies have found an increased risk of anemia in people with allergic disorders, but they were cross-sectional in design. This study used a cohort dataset and found that children with asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and food allergies at 2 years of age had a higher likelihood of developing anemia in the next year. Additionally, any allergy at 2 years of age was associated with an increased risk of anemia at the age of 3 years.

Iron-Deficiency in Atopic Diseases: Innate Immune Priming by Allergens and Siderophores

Franziska Roth-Walter

Summary: Iron deficiency affects about a third of the world's population, and it is driven by chronic lack of dietary iron and hampered uptake due to immune activation. This deficiency has significant impact on immune cells and is linked to an increased risk of atopic diseases in children and anemia in allergy sufferers. Improving iron status seems to protect against allergy development. Understanding the interconnections between iron metabolism and allergies is crucial in understanding the pathophysiology of atopic diseases and developing new approaches for allergy treatment.

Association between toenail zinc concentrations and incidence of asthma among American young adults: The CARDIA study

Wenjing Tang et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study found no significant longitudinal association between toenail zinc concentrations and asthma incidence among American young adults over a period of 22.5 years. While no overall significant association was found, a significant inverse linear association was observed among African Americans, indicating the need for further research to confirm these findings.

Maternal iron status during early pregnancy and school-age, lung function, asthma, and allergy: The Generation R Study

Hugo G. Quezada-Pinedo et al.

Summary: Higher maternal transferrin concentrations during pregnancy, reflecting lower serum iron levels, were associated with an increased risk of child's physician-diagnosed inhalant allergy but not lung outcomes. There were no consistent associations of other maternal iron indicators with child's respiratory or allergy outcomes.
