Ecological correlates of riverine diatom and macroinvertebrate alpha and beta diversity across Arctic Fennoscandia

John E. Brittain et al.

Summary: The Arctic freshwaters provide support for biota that have adapted to the harsh conditions in this region. However, due to climate change, the environmental filters in these freshwater ecosystems are also changing rapidly. This study analyzed the patterns and correlates of alpha and beta diversity in benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate communities across northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The results showed wide variation in the replacement and richness difference components of beta diversity in both groups. Climate variables, particularly temperature, were found to be strongly associated with biodiversity patterns in these Arctic rivers. Overall, the study highlights the importance of protecting multiple stream reaches or even entire catchments to conserve total riverine biodiversity, particularly in the face of predicted temperature changes in Arctic areas.

Summary: This study assesses the contributions of local and regional processes and historical and contemporary factors in establishing macroecological patterns. The results reveal that regional environmental filtering plays a crucial role in limiting species range and shaping the regional species pool. The study also indicates that there are differences in diversity patterns between northern and southern regions, with northern species pools exhibiting phylogenetic clustering and southern ones showing overdispersion.

Environmental filtering and habitat (mis)matching of riverine invertebrate metacommunities

David Murray-Stoker et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatial patterns and drivers of environmental filtering and habitat matching in riverine macroinvertebrate communities across different ecoregions in the United States. The results show that environmental filtering varies strongly by ecoregion, while habitat matching does not. Functional trait diversity also varies by ecoregion, but not as strongly as environmental filtering. The predictors of functional traits vary by individual traits, trait categories, and ecoregions, with habitat preference and dispersal traits primarily influenced by network variables. Overall, this study provides insights into the contingent nature of community assembly and has implications for the conservation and management of freshwater systems.

Summary: Freshwater ecosystems and their biota are more threatened than marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Reconsidering the basics of nature conservation and restoration, and including knowledge on the dynamics of rivers draining pristine catchments, could be a solution to halt the negative impacts of human development.
