Accurate tracking of forest activity key to multi-jurisdictional management goals: A case study in California

Clarke A. Knight et al.

Summary: Accurate monitoring of forest activities is a vital part of sustainable forest management, but the complexity of effective monitoring lies in the diverse forest operations, lack of data standardization, and discrepancies between field inspections and remotely-sensed records. California and the USFS have set a goal to treat one million acres of forest and rangeland annually by 2025, but current federal and state forest management datasets are disjoint. This study addresses barriers hindering the assessment of management goals using federal and state archival records.

Linking Federal Forest Restoration with Wood Utilization: Modeling Biomass Prices and Analyzing Forest Restoration Costs in the Northern Sierra Nevada

Camille Swezy et al.

Summary: The study shows that the cost of forest restoration on federally-managed land in California far exceeds current market prices for biomass, requiring additional investment to support. Biomass outlets closer to supply sources can reduce costs, and local wood utilization campuses play a key role in supporting forest restoration efforts.

Hydrogen from wood gasification with CCS - a techno-environmental analysis of production and use as transport fuel

Cristina Antonini et al.

Summary: The study investigates three gasification technologies for H-2 production using dry biomass as input, comparing them with reforming of natural gas or biomethane and electrolysis. The results show that all technologies analyzed provide negative CO2 emissions when coupled with CCS. Fuel cell electric vehicles using hydrogen from biomass turn out to be the most climate friendly option, with even possible negative total greenhouse gas emissions.
