Inflammation in obesity, diabetes, and related disorders

Theresa Rohm et al.

Summary: Obesity can cause chronic systemic inflammation, leading to insulin resistance, beta-cell dysfunction, and ultimately type 2 diabetes. This inflammatory state also contributes to long-term complications of diabetes and may be associated with other conditions like Alzheimer's disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory roles of vitamins in COVID-19 therapy

Aurelia Magdalena Pisoschi et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is caused by an abundant generation of reactive oxygen species and a diminished capacity of the organism's endogenous systems to counteract them. In viral infections, activation of pro-oxidative pathways and increased inflammatory cytokines are common. Vitamin intake has been shown to lower oxidative stress markers, alleviate cytokine storm, and potentially reduce disease severity. Antioxidants also play a role in directly combating the virus. Careful consideration of timing, dosage, and interactions of micronutrients is important.

Self-Amplifying Assembly of Peptides in Macrophages for Enhanced Inflammatory Treatment

Yanqiu Song et al.

Summary: This study reported the self-amplifying assembly of peptides in macrophages to improve the anti-inflammatory efficacy of conventional drugs. By coassembling an enzyme-responsive peptide with its derivative, the assembly of peptides was promoted by the enzyme NQO1. This amplifying assembling system was used to deliver dexamethasone to acute injured lungs, resulting in enhanced anti-inflammatory efficacy.

Emerging Nanotechnologies and Microbiome Engineering for the Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Omar A. Abed et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammation that affects almost 7 million people worldwide. Current treatments are effective in managing symptoms, but fail to target the root cause. Self-assembled nanoparticles have shown great potential as drug delivery systems for treating IBD by surviving harsh gastric conditions and reaching inflamed areas of the gastrointestinal tract. These nanoparticles can localize drugs to the affected regions, reduce off-target toxicities, and restore symbiotic microbes while reducing harmful ones. However, challenges such as scale-up synthesis, potential side effects, and financial obstacles in clinical trials need to be addressed. Research on nanoparticles is crucial for the development of more effective therapeutics for IBD.
