Anticancer activity of Piper chaudocanum essential oils and essential oil-mediated silver nanoparticles

The current study aimed to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Piper chaudocanum leaf essential oils using a green method and investigate their inhibitory effect on HepG2 cell lines. The structure and morphology of the essential oil-mediated AgNPs were characterized using various analyses. The results showed that the essential oils and AgNPs could alter the morphology of cancer cells and inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner.
The current study was designed for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Piper chaudocanum leaf essential oils and to investigate their inhibitory effect on HepG2 cell lines. The structure and morphology of the essential oil-mediated AgNPs were examined using UV-Vis, XRD, FT-IR, and SEM analyses. XRD results confirmed the formation of AgNPs with an average particle size of 14 nm. The chemical compositions of the essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with GC/MS mass spectrometry and GC/FID flame ionization detector and identified with a total of 19 compounds and nerolidol as the main components (73.56%) for the first time. The essential oils and AgNPs altered the morphology of cancer cells and inhibited the cell proliferation of HepG2 in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 values corresponding to 22.9 and 13.8 mu g/mL by using cell viability assay (MTT). The results of this study showed that the essential oils and AgNPs had the potential to inhibit HepG2 cancer cell proliferation.
