Effect of selected elicitors on phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) sprouts obtained from seeds cultivated using the hydroponics technology

Nikhil Kawatra et al.

Summary: Elicitation using citric acid and sodium chloride effectively enhances the phytochemical profile of buckwheat sprouts by increasing the content of bioactive compounds. The sprouts treated with citric acid and sodium chloride show higher levels of phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity is positively correlated with phenolic content, flavonoids, tannins, rutin, and ferulic acid.

Rewiring of the seed metabolome during Tartary buckwheat domestication

Hui Zhao et al.

Summary: Crop domestication leads to changes in the metabolites of Tartary buckwheat, with several genes identified as responsible for the synthesis of important medicinal components and defense molecules such as salicylic acid. The lower expression of these genes is associated with a reduction in salicylic acid and other medicinal compounds.

Comparison of buckwheat genomes reveals the genetic basis of metabolomic divergence and ecotype differentiation

Ming He et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-quality chromosome-level genome of golden buckwheat was assembled, and a one-to-one syntenic relationship with the chromosomes of Tartary buckwheat was found. Two large inversions that differentiate golden buckwheat and Tartary buckwheat were identified. Metabolomic and genetic comparisons showed amplified gene families and increased medicinal flavonoid content in golden buckwheat. Candidate genes involved in flavonoid accumulation and plant architecture differentiation were also identified. This comparative genomic study provides important genomic resources for improving buckwheat with excellent nutritional and medicinal value.

Comparing Crop Yield, Secondary Metabolite Contents, and Antifungal Activity of Extracts of Helichrysum odoratissimum Cultivated in Aquaponic, Hydroponic, and Field Systems

Nomnqophiso Zantanta et al.

Summary: The overexploitation of wild plants and conventional farming methods have had devastating environmental consequences. This study evaluated the prospects of aquaponics and hydroponics as alternative methods for cultivating medicinal plants. The results showed that there were no significant differences in crop yield between aquaponic and hydroponic systems. Aquaponically cultivated plants exhibited the best antifungal activity, while the hydroponically cultivated plants had higher total flavonol contents.
