Mammalian antiviral systems directed by small RNA

Tomoko Takahashi et al.

Summary: Viruses are widespread and organisms have evolved various immune systems to limit virus replication. While protein-guided immune systems in mammals are well studied, small RNA-directed immune systems also play important roles in certain contexts, indicating their continued activity in mammalian antiviral immunity.

100-My history of bornavirus infections hidden in vertebrate genomes

Junna Kawasaki et al.

Summary: Ancient bornavirus infections have been identified in various vertebrate lineages, especially in primate ancestors. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that primate ancestors were infected with multiple bornaviral lineages during evolution, with some lineages coexisting and repeatedly endogenizing for tens of millions of years. Moreover, a bornaviral lineage coexisted with primate ancestors also endogenized in some ancestral bats, possibly spreading infections as the ancestors migrated.
