Alkyl/Glycosyl Sulfoxides as Radical Precursors and Their Use in the Synthesis of Pyridine Derivatives

Demeng Xie et al.

Summary: This research presents the use of alkyl sulfoxides as precursors to radicals in the synthesis of pyridine derivatives. It demonstrates that alkyl sulfoxides, N-methoxy pyridinium salts, and fluoride anions form electron donor-acceptor complexes in solution, which can undergo a radical chain process upon visible light irradiation to produce various pyridine derivatives efficiently. The broad scope of this reaction extends to different sulfoxides and N-methoxy pyridiniums. The synthetic versatility of sulfoxides as radical precursors adds to their significance as a useful tool in chemistry.

C2-selective alkylation of pyridines by rhodium-aluminum complexes

Naofumi Hara et al.

Summary: This study reports a C2-and mono-selective alkylation of various pyridines and azines with unactivated alkenes and vinylarenes using a heterobimetallic Rh-Al catalyst. Experimental results show that the use of aliphatic alkenes exclusively affords linear alkylation products, while vinylarenes mainly afford branched alkylation products. The details of the reaction mechanism, revealed by DFT calculations, indicate that the reductive elimination of the products is rate-determining, consistent with experimental results. The origin of the linear/branched selectivity is elucidated based on deformation/interaction analysis.
