Quantifying song behavior in a free-living, light-weight, mobile bird using accelerometers

Summary: To understand animal communication, this study used lightweight accelerometers to observe and classify the behavior of European Nightjars. The results show that accelerometer-based identification of vocalizations can be a promising tool to study communication in free-living, small-sized birds. Summary: In animal ecology, energy expenditure is used to assess the consequences of different behaviors, life history events, or environments. Dynamic body acceleration (DBA) is an alternative proxy for measuring energy expenditure. In this study, DBA and heart rate were measured in free-ranging lesser black-backed gulls, and the results showed that DBA overestimated energy costs during soaring flight, while DBA and time-energy budgets (TEBs) performed similarly in estimating daily energy expenditure.

In this study, the researchers combined biologging and the doubly labelled water method to examine the energy expenditure and acceleration in dovekies. The results show that overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA) was not a reliable predictor of energy expenditure, but accelerometer-derived time budgets accurately estimated energy expenditure.
