PVA fibre reinforced high-strength cementitious composite for 3D printing: Mechanical properties and durability

Xiaoyan Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, polyvinyl alcohol fibers were incorporated into the cementitious printing ink to alter the brittle failure mode of common printed concrete. The effects of printing and loading paths on mechanical properties and durability were investigated. The results showed that the printing and loading paths had an impact on the mechanical properties and durability of the samples.

Improving the Performances of a Mortar for 3D Printing by Mineral Modifiers

Valery Lesovik et al.

Summary: The use of 3D printing for constructing buildings has great potential. However, the lack of cement mortars with the required technical characteristics has hindered its mass use for high-rise buildings. This study focuses on the development of a composite binder using a mineral modifier obtained through joint grinding of bentonite clay, chalk, and sand. The researchers have obtained a composite binder for high-strength composites that can provide effective mortars for 3D-additive high-rise construction technologies. The study also established the influence of the genetic characteristics of the modifier components on the properties of the composite binder.

Foam 3D printing for construction: A review of applications, materials, and processes

Patrick Bedarf et al.

Summary: This review aimed to define the field of foam 3DP (F3DP) in construction and provide an overview of relevant developments, challenges, and future research by analyzing over 150 peer-reviewed articles and research reports. Three major themes within the academic debate about F3DP were identified: developments in material composition and design, printing and processing technologies, and future challenges in application and material processing. The review brings together promising advancements in F3DP for construction into a systematic overview and opens new horizons in research and development for sustainable construction processes.

Feasibility of glass/basalt fiber reinforced seawater coral sand mortar for 3D printing

L. G. Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of mortar mixes made of seawater, coral sand, and glass or basalt fibers were developed and tested for their fresh and hardened properties to create 3D printable glass/basalt fiber reinforced seawater coral sand mortars. Adjustment of water reducer dosage allowed for good buildability in all mixes, although the addition of fibers slightly decreased compressive strength. The printed specimens exhibited lower flexural and compressive strengths compared to standard un-printed specimens, but the overall potential of fiber reinforced seawater coral sand mortar for use in remote areas as a 3D printable material was highlighted.

Hardened properties and durability of large-scale 3D printed cement-based materials

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties and void distribution of large-scale 3D printed cement-based materials. The results show that 3DPC has higher strength and better resistance to some degradation mechanisms, but lower resistance to others. Voids in 3DPC are strongly oriented along the printing direction and more interconnected, leading to anisotropy in material performance.

The effect of restrained early age shrinkage on the interlayer bond and durability of 3D printed concrete

G. M. Moelich et al.

Summary: The study found that shrinkage leads to shear strain concentrations at the interlayers due to a lack of particle interlocking and non-uniform pore water evaporation, resulting in interlayer slip. The restrained specimens showed a 12% reduction in interlayer bond strength, a 70% higher permeability, and a 17% higher chloride ion penetration. These adverse consequences were due to interlayer slip and microcracking.
