Sparse optimal stochastic control

Summary: This paper investigates sparse optimal control of continuous-time stochastic systems using a dynamic programming approach. The non-smooth L-0 cost functional leads to the characterization of the value function as a viscosity solution to the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, from which a necessary and sufficient condition for L-0 optimality is derived. The relationship with L-1 optimal control problem for control-affine systems is also explored, along with an equivalence theorem.

Schrodinger Approach to Optimal Control of Large-Size Populations

Summary: This article discusses the stochastic control problem of large-size populations consisting of a continuum of identical and noncooperative agents, designing optimal controllers to ensure stability. By representing the coupled forward-backward partial differential equations as decoupled Schrodinger equations, explicit control design constraints are obtained using spectral properties of the linear Schrodinger operator. The interpretation of the Schrodinger potential as the cost function of a related optimal control problem motivates a quadrature-based algorithm for computing finite-time optimal control.
