Can IMERG Data Capture the Scaling of Precipitation Extremes With Temperature at Different Time Scales?

Seyed-Mohammad Hosseini-Moghari et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the validity of IMERG in scaling extreme precipitation with temperature. The findings reveal that IMERG can accurately capture the changes in precipitation extremes with temperature at 6-hourly and 24-hourly scales, especially over dry regions. However, IMERG underestimates the scaling factor in wet regions, particularly at the 1-hourly scale.

Do ERA5 and ERA5-land precipitation estimates outperform satellite-based precipitation products? A comprehensive comparison between state-of-the-art model-based and satellite-based precipitation products over mainland China

Jintao Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that satellite-based precipitation products generally outperform model-based products, but the latter perform better in high-latitude regions and winter. ERA5 and ERA5-Land show similar spatio-temporal patterns and have their own advantages. Satellite products perform best in subregions of subtropical and tropical monsoon climate.

Monsoon precipitation characteristics and extreme precipitation events over Northwest India using Indian high resolution regional reanalysis

Deepanshu Aggarwal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability of extreme rainfall events (ERE) in Northwest India using India's first highest resolution regional atmospheric reanalysis, Indian Monsoon Data Assimilation and Analysis (IMDAA). The study finds that the mean Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) precipitation over Northwest India is increasing significantly and EREs also exhibit increasing trends. The rising convective available potential energy suggests that the atmosphere over Northwest India is becoming more unstable during ISM, allowing it to hold more moisture. The IMDAA reanalysis successfully represents the physical linkages among moisture availability, instability, and convective precipitation formation in Northwest India.

AERA5-Asia A Long-Term Asian Precipitation Dataset (0.1°, 1-hourly, 1951-2015, Asia) Anchoring the ERA5-Land under the Total Volume Control by APHRODITE

Ziqiang Ma et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel approach for generating a long-term precipitation dataset for Asia. The dataset, called AERA5-Asia, provides high-resolution and high-quality precipitation data with sufficient length and consistency. The results show that AERA5-Asia outperforms other precipitation datasets in terms of both magnitudes and occurrences of precipitation events, especially in Mainland China. It is suggested that AERA5-Asia can be a valuable resource for various climatological and hydrological research questions.

Scaling of precipitation extremes with temperature in China's mainland: Evaluation of satellite precipitation data

Seyed-Mohammad Hosseini-Moghari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of daily and 30-minute precipitation extremes to temperature variables across different climate zones in China. The results show a mix of positive and negative scaling factors for extreme daily precipitation with surface air temperature (SAT), with peak structures observed at higher temperatures. Comparisons between different temperature ranges reveal that a single scaling rate is not applicable for the entire temperature range. The scaling factors based on the temperature range before the peak structure exhibit better agreement with the Clausius-Clapeyron scaling, except for the tropical region. Daily scaling factors based on IMERG data are generally comparable to CN05.1 results, with discrepancies mainly in tropical and plateau climates. However, the 30-minute precipitation extremes in IMERG data do not increase as expected with rising temperatures, indicating the need for another precipitation dataset for scaling at this timescale, at least for China's mainland.

Evaluating Winter Precipitation over the Western Himalayas in a High-Resolution Indian Regional Reanalysis Using Multisource Climate Datasets

Nischal Nischal et al.

Summary: Considerable uncertainties exist in precipitation characteristics over the western Himalayan region. The complex topography causes small-scale but high-intensity storms that are difficult to monitor due to a sparse gauge network. Traditional precipitation measurements, including satellite and gauge data, often underestimate the rainfall over mountainous terrains. However, the high-resolution regional reanalysis IMDAA shows better performance in representing winter precipitation characteristics, providing more accurate spatial and temporal information compared to other datasets. IMDAA also demonstrates potential in characterizing winter atmospheric dynamics, which is valuable for climate studies and impact assessment over the fragile western Himalayan ecosystem.

Intriguing aspects of rainfall initiation over rainshadow region during boreal summer monsoon

T. S. Mohan et al.

Summary: This novel study explains a plausible physical mechanism for rainfall initiation over the southeast peninsular India during the southwest monsoon season, and elucidates the contrasting rainfall patterns between the rain shadow region and central India through the response of the maritime continent. The study shows that the maritime continent is a prominent source for the initiation of wet spells over the rain shadow region, with a lead time of 5-7 days, and the evolution of convective anomalies resembles a classical Gill-type response. The combined effect of large-scale circulation and moisture anomalies over the maritime continent contributes to positive rainfall anomalies over the rain shadow region.

Summary: The study demonstrates that under climate change, hourly precipitation extremes and storm depths are expected to intensify in the US, with what is now a 20-year rainfall becoming a 7-year rainfall on average for approximately 75% of gridpoints. This intensification is mainly characterized by an increase in rainfall tail heaviness, with statistically significant changes in the seasonality and duration of rainfall extremes observed over about 95% of the domain.

Eliminating the Hook in Precipitation-Temperature Scaling

Johan B. Visser et al.

Summary: Observational studies on extreme daily and subdaily precipitation-temperature sensitivities to a warming climate show that rainfall intensity generally increases with temperature to a maximum before decreasing, creating second-order discontinuities or hook-like structures. However, these patterns are influenced by event duration and location, with precipitation rate often decreasing due to shorter event durations. Average precipitation intensity scaling follows expected Clausius-Clapeyron relations, while 1-h peak precipitation intensities exhibit super-CC scaling in tropical climates.
