Environmental justice analysis of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure using low-cost sensors in California

Amber L. Kramer et al.

Summary: The increasing number and severity of wildfires in California have a negative impact on air quality for millions of residents. This study found positive correlations between higher PM2.5 concentrations and poverty, cardiovascular emergency department visits, and housing inequities. Sensors located within 30 km of active wildfires showed significant increases in indoor (-800%) and outdoor (-540%) PM2.5 concentrations during the fires.

Maria-Iosifina Kasdagli et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to air pollution may be associated with increased mortality from diseases related to the nervous system, cardiometabolic conditions, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). However, greenness in the environment may have beneficial effects on certain mortality outcomes.

Vertical Profiling of Fresh Biomass Burning Aerosol Optical Properties over the Greek Urban City of Ioannina, during the PANACEA Winter Campaign

Christina-Anna Papanikolaou et al.

Summary: This study utilized lidar technique to investigate the vertical distribution of aerosol particles in Ioannina, Greece during winter. The results showed that biomass burning activities were the main source of winter air pollution in the region. By measuring and analyzing aerosol particles, it was found that most of the aerosol layers in the lower free troposphere were fresh biomass burning particles, with wood burning being the primary contributor.

Impact of spatial and vertical distribution of air masses on PM10 chemical components at the Eastern Mediterranean - A seasonal approach

Konstantinos Dimitriou et al.

Summary: In this study, an upgraded three-dimensional CWT model was used to analyze the atmospheric transport and chemical composition of PM10 in different vertical layers. The results showed that Mediterranean airflows and long-range northeastern airflows had different contributions to the chemical composition, while Saharan dust intrusion was also an important factor.

Association of long-term exposure to PM2.5 with hypertension and diabetes among the middle-aged and elderly people in Chinese mainland: a spatial study

Zirong Ye et al.

Summary: Epidemiological evidence has shown a significant association between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes among middle-aged and elderly individuals in China. Spatial analysis indicated that non-smokers were more affected by PM2.5 exposure in relation to hypertension and diabetes.

Summary: This study found evidence for a positive association between PM2.5 exposure and mortality from cardiovascular disease in a Japanese population, even in an area with relatively low-level air pollution. Exposure was not associated with all-cause mortality or cancer and respiratory disease mortality.

Spatiotemporal representativeness of air pollution monitoring in Dublin, Ireland

H. A. Perillo et al.

Summary: Selecting appropriate air pollution monitoring sites is crucial for accurate reporting of air quality, improving modeling quality, and implementing policies for cleaner air in urban environments. COVID-19 restrictions have impacted air quality in Dublin, Ireland, providing a unique dataset to study spatial and temporal variations in air quality. The study finds reductions in traffic-related air pollution and changes in pollutant concentrations during the pandemic.

Impacts of severe residential wood burning on atmospheric processing, water-soluble organic aerosol and light absorption, in an inland city of Southeastern Europe

D. G. Kaskaoutis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols and inorganic species in a mountainous city in Greece. It found high concentrations of organic carbon and levoglucosan in winter, with a high proportion of water-soluble organic carbon potentially formed from fast oxidation processes. Using a levoglucosan tracer method, the study estimated high contributions of biomass burning to organic carbon in winter. In summer, the levels of carbonaceous components were low, with a higher proportion of water-soluble organic carbon.

PM10 Concentrations in a Provincial City of Inland Greece in the Times of Austerity and Their Relationship with Meteorological and Socioeconomic Conditions

O. A. Sindosi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the factors influencing PM10 concentrations in the provincial city of Ioannina, NW Greece, finding that road traffic and residential heating are the main contributors, while social-economic factors also play a role. The study reveals that during times of deep austerity, there is an increase in poor air quality days due to changes in fuel consumption for residential heating.

Annual exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban environments linked to wintertime wood-burning episodes

Irini Tsiodra et al.

Summary: A study in Athens, Greece found that biomass burning (BB) is a major source of PAHs in winter, leading to levels 7 times higher than in other seasons. The contribution of non-local sources increased in summer and was comparable to local sources. PAHs associated with BB pose a higher health risk compared to other sources, accounting for nearly half of the annual PAH carcinogenic potential.

Summary: Estimates of air pollution mortality in sub-Saharan Africa are limited by a lack of surface observations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Despite the absence of reference air pollution monitors in Kinshasa and Brazzaville, some have been deployed in other parts of the region. The study results emphasize the urgency of implementing clean air solutions.
