Performance Evaluation of the Meteorology and Air Quality Conditions From Multiscale WRF-CMAQ Simulations for the Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS)

Ana Torres-Vazquez et al.

Summary: The Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study aimed to improve the understanding of ozone chemistry and transport from New York City to the Long Island Sound and Connecticut coastline. The study found that using higher model resolutions can enhance the simulation of sea breeze circulations, low-level jets, and boundary layer evolution, resulting in improved surface meteorology statistics and more accurate ozone predictions.

Investigating Changes in Ozone Formation Chemistry during Summertime Pollution Events over the Northeastern United States

Madankui Tao et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial and temporal variability of ozone formation on a local scale is crucial for effective mitigation. By combining airborne remote sensing data and ground-based measurements, this study investigates changes in ozone precursors and the inferred chemical production regime on high-ozone days in two Northeast urban domains. The results show that the ratio of HCHO-VCDTrop to NO2-VCDTrop generally increases on ozone exceedance days, indicating a transition towards a more NOx-sensitive ozone production regime. Warmer temperatures and local emissions play a role in the high-ozone days, with slower wind speeds in one domain and stronger, southwesterly winds in the other.

Long Island enhanced aerosol event during 2018 LISTOS: Association with heatwave and marine influences

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: During the 2018 Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS), it was found that there was an enhancement in aerosol concentration, temperatures, and ozone mixing ratio between June 29 and July 4, 2018 on Long Island and the greater NYC metropolitan area. Two aerosol formation pathways were identified during this enhanced period.

Synergistic aircraft and ground observations of transported wildfire smoke and its impact on air quality in New York City during the summer 2018 LISTOS campaign

Yonghua Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transport of wildfire smoke in the urban and coastal areas of New York City during the summer of 2018, revealing the optical properties of smoke particles and the significant impact of aloft smoke plumes on air quality. The findings suggest that the wildfire smoke particles have distinctive features and can contribute significantly to air pollution in populated areas like NYC.

Improving predictability of high-ozone episodes through dynamic boundary conditions, emission refresh and chemical data assimilation during the Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS) field campaign

Siqi Ma et al.

Summary: The study developed a set of potential forecast improvements to enhance the capability of a 3 km forecasting model for different pollutants. Dynamic boundary conditions significantly improved O-3 prediction, while high-resolution simulations outperformed the operational 12 km simulation for NO2, highlighting the importance of spatially resolved emission and meteorology inputs for short-lived pollutants.

Summary: Volatile chemical products (VCPs) are a significant source of anthropogenic organic emissions in the United States. The VCPy framework accurately predicts national organic emissions from VCPs and highlights the importance of VCPs as a source of secondary pollution in urban environments.
