Impacts of meteorology and precursor emission change on O3 variation in Tianjin, China from 2015 to 2021

Jing Ding et al.

Summary: This study reveals the deterioration of surface ozone pollution in Northern China and identifies the influence of meteorology and precursor emissions on ozone pollution. The results show that the variation of ozone in Tianjin is mainly driven by changes in precursor emissions, and the impact of meteorological conditions on ozone pollution varies over time. The year 2019, with unfavorable meteorological conditions and increased precursor emissions, experienced the worst ozone pollution since 2015. Temperature is found to be the most important factor affecting ozone levels, followed by air humidity, especially during summer days when ozone pollution frequently exceeds the standard level under specific conditions of relative humidity and temperature.

Summary: Significant upward trends in surface ozone have been observed in China, particularly in the North China Plain during warm seasons, with anthropogenic factors accounting for 94% of the trend. Meteorological conditions and anthropogenic factors both influence the interannual variability of ozone, with temperature being the most essential factor affecting ozone variations.

Exploring drivers of the aggravated surface O3 over North China Plain in summer of 2015-2019: Aerosols, precursors, and meteorology

Shengju Ou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of aerosols, precursor emissions, and meteorology on O-3 in the summer of the North China Plain. The results showed that the decrease in PM2.5 led to a relatively uniform increase in O-3, while the reduction in NO2 coupled with stable VOCs resulted in an increase in O-3 in the VOCs-limited regions. Additionally, meteorological fluctuations played an important role in the increase of O-3.

Responses of surface O3 and PM2.5 trends to changes of anthropogenic emissions in summer over Beijing during 2014-2019: A study based on multiple linear regression and WRF-Chem

Zhouming He et al.

Summary: In Beijing, there was a significant decrease in PM2.5 concentration, while O-3 concentration remained relatively constant. The impact of NO2 on atmospheric PM2.5 is likely responsible for the slower decrease in PM2.5 compared to SO2. Emissions of NOx and VOCs from industry and transportation were found to play a significant role in O-3 production in Beijing.

Summary: This study used machine learning methods to investigate the roles of meteorological factors, emissions, and chemistry in five severe haze episodes that occurred before or during the COVID-19 lockdown in China. The study found that in addition to high levels of primary emissions, meteorological factors played a dominant role in PM2.5 pollution in these episodes, followed by chemistry.

Concurrent hot extremes and high ultraviolet radiation in summer over the Yangtze Plain and their possible impact on surface ozone

Yan Xia et al.

Summary: Hot extremes and high surface UV radiation occur concurrently in the Yangtze Plain in summer, primarily due to the westward extension of the Western Pacific Subtropical High which leads to less clouds and more solar radiation. The study suggests that surface UV radiation may be dominated by cloud variations and hot extremes and high UV radiation may result in more surface ozone.

The results showed that meteorology played a crucial role in regulating the monthly variations of particles. North China Plain as a hot spot of ozone pollution exacerbated by extreme high temperatures

Summary: The North China Plain is identified as a hot spot of coupled extremes in surface ozone and heat. The number of days with both ozone pollution and high temperature extremes is increasing in this region. These coupled extremes have more severe health impacts on humans compared to ozone pollution days occurring individually, and the higher temperatures play a major role in driving these health effects.

Summary: Accurate measurement and estimation of VOCs emissions in China are crucial for effective pollution control measures. This study reviewed two estimation methods and found that emissions have been increasing since 1949. Industrial and solvent use contributions to VOCs emissions are increasing, while transportation sector contributions are decreasing since 2000. Spatially, hotspots of emissions are concentrated in eastern China.

Unprecedented decline in summertime surface ozone over eastern China in 2020 comparably attributable to anthropogenic emission reductions and meteorology

Hao Yin et al.

Summary: China's nationwide monitoring network has shown that urban summertime surface ozone levels increased by about 5% annually from 2013 to 2019, with a significant reduction observed in eastern China cities in May-August 2020. This reduction was mainly driven by changes in anthropogenic emissions and weather conditions, highlighting the effectiveness of current emission control strategies in ozone mitigation. The study suggests the potential of combining atmospheric chemical models with machine learning for better understanding and managing ozone drivers.

Large scale control of surface ozone by relative humidity observed during warm seasons in China

Mengying Li et al.

Summary: The study in 74 major cities in China during 2017-2018 shows that surface ozone levels decrease with increasing relative humidity, with higher humidity leading to lower ozone levels. The impact of humidity on ozone levels is more pronounced at high temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, while the effect of temperature on ozone levels is more noticeable at low humidity levels below 40%. These findings suggest promising common methods of climate engineering to protect human health on a large scale.

Factors Underlying Spatiotemporal Variations in Atmospheric PM2.5 Concentrations in Zhejiang Province, China

Xuan Li et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatiotemporal variations in key factors influencing PM2.5 in Zhejiang Province, China from 2000 to 2019 using random forest and SHAP algorithms. The results showed that factors influencing PM2.5 varied significantly, with meteorological factors being the most important, followed by socioeconomic factors and topography/land cover factors. While GDP and transportation factors initially increased in importance, their contribution has declined recently, indicating that economic and infrastructural development may not necessarily lead to higher PM2.5 concentrations. Vegetation productivity, as indicated by NDVI changes, has become more essential in improving air quality in the region.

Summary: Recent research has shown that since 2013, the ozone formation regime across China has shifted to transitional and NOx-limited modes, primarily controlled by NOx. However, in this scenario, the increase in volatile organic compounds has become the main driver for rising ozone pollution in China. Therefore, for effective ozone pollution management, emission reductions in both VOCs and NOx should be equally considered.
