PM2.5-bound phthalates and phthalate substitutes in a megacity of southern China: spatioseasonal variations, source apportionment, and risk assessment

Yu-Qi Huang et al.

Summary: This research investigated the spatioseasonal variations and sources of particle-bound phthalates (PAEs) and their substitutes (APs) in a megacity in South China. The results showed significant spatial and seasonal variations in plasticizer concentrations, with main sources identified as plastics, personal care products, solvents, and the polyester industry.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Marine Atmosphere from the Western Pacific to the Southern Ocean: , Gas-Particle Partitioning, and Source Apportionment

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) along a cross-section from China to Antarctica, revealing their spatial distribution, source contributions, and gas-particle partitioning in the Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans. The results showed that the sources and temperature of air masses significantly influenced the distribution of PAHs, with coal combustion emissions being the major source.

Steady-State Based Model of Airborne Particle/Gas and Settled Dust/Gas Partitioning for Semivolatile Organic Compounds in the Indoor Environment

Hai-Ling Li et al.

Summary: Equations have been developed to predict the partitioning of gas/particle and dust/gas in indoor environments, and these equations have been verified by global monitoring data. The assumption of instantaneous equilibrium for compounds with high partition coefficients may not be valid. The newly developed equations provide a tool for accurate assessment of human exposure to SVOCs in the indoor environment.

A review of common non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers for use in food contact materials

Patrick Harmon et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the available toxicity, migration, and human biomonitoring data of several non-ortho phthalate plasticizers used in food packaging and processing. The study demonstrates that these plasticizers have been well-studied and are generally of low toxicity, with minimal adverse effects on human health.

Distribution, source, and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the soils from a typical petroleum refinery area in south China

Wenmin Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the topsoils of a retired petroleum refinery area in Guangdong province, China. The results showed that the concentrations of PAHs exceeded the Dutch soil quality standard, primarily distributed in the storage tank area and came from sources such as coal combustion, petroleum dripping, and traffic emissions. Soil ingestion was identified as the main pathway for PAHs exposure, posing potential carcinogenic hazards to human health.

Evidence of stockpile contamination for legacy polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in the urban environment of Cyprus (Eastern Mediterranean): Influence of meteorology on air level variability and gas/ particle partitioning based on equilibrium and steady-state models

Minas Iakovides et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the occurrence and fate of various organic pollutants in the atmosphere over Cyprus for the first time. The study found the presence of potential stockpile-contaminated sites and predicted the partitioning behavior of these pollutants using different models. The study also highlighted the influence of seasonal and local factors on the atmospheric levels of these pollutants.

An Overview: Organophosphate Flame Retardants in the Atmosphere

Hsin-Chieh Kung et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the current knowledge of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in the atmosphere. It is found that OPFRs mainly exist in the particulate phase, with chlorinated-OPFRs being the main compounds. OPFRs have been detected in remote environments, suggesting long-range transport potential. Some atmospheric transformations of OPFRs have been reported to be more toxic and persistent than parent compounds.

Occurrence and distribution of typical semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs) in paired indoor and outdoor atmospheric fine particle samples from cities in southern China

Shengtao Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and sources of SVOCs in indoor and outdoor environments in typical cities in southern China. The results showed that compounds indoors mainly originated from different household goods and products, while outdoor environments were strongly influenced by vehicle exhausts and industrial activities.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in five East Asian cities: Seasonal characteristics, health risks, and yearly variations

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs between warm and cold seasons in East Asian cities. Traffic emissions have a major impact on air quality, with coal combustion being more pronounced in the cold season. PAHs and NPAHs from the Asian continent can influence Japanese cities, demonstrating the positive effects of air pollution control policies in China.

Plastic Additives in Ambient Fine Particulate Matter in the Pearl River Delta, China: High-Throughput Characterization and Health Implications

Xiaotu Liu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the abundance and distribution of 163 plastic additives in PM2.5 collected from different sites in the Pearl River Delta region of China. Concentrations of PAEs were found to be significantly higher than other groups, followed by PAE replacements and OPEs. Chemical-dependent exposure risks were characterized using estimated daily intake and hazard quotient approaches, revealing potential health concerns from exposure to a mixture of chemical components in airborne particles.

Probing Legacy and Alternative Flame Retardants in the Air of Chinese Cities

Shizhen Zhao et al.

Summary: In China, organophosphate FRs are the most common, with a concentration range of 1-612 ng/m(3), several orders of magnitude higher than PBDEs (1-1827 pg/m(3)) and NBFRs (1-1428 pg/m(3)). From 2013/2014 to 2018, levels of PBDEs, NBFRs, and DPs have significantly decreased, while that of OPFRs has increased by 1 order of magnitude. Gas-particle partitioning analysis showed that FRs could have not reached equilibrium, and the steady-state model is better suited for FRs with a higher log K-OA (>13).

Phthalic Acid Esters: Natural Sources and Biological Activities

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are a class of lipophilic chemicals widely used as plasticizers and additives to improve mechanical extensibility and flexibility of various products. They are not only widely detected in the environment but also found in plant and microbial sources, potentially being biosynthesized in nature. PAEs possess various biological activities and may influence the competitiveness of plants, algae, and microorganisms.
