Evolution in physicochemical properties of fine particles emitted from residential coal combustion based on chamber experiment

Zhenxiao Wu et al.

Summary: Fine particles (PM2.5) emitted from residential coal combustion have adverse effects on atmospheric geochemistry and human health. The composition of PM2.5 varies according to coal types, and control measures for sulfate emissions should prioritize honeycomb briquettes. Fresh particles emitted from coal combustion can undergo aging via aqueous-phase reactions with reactive gases under high humidity, which can negatively impact air quality and regional climate.

A review of atmospheric individual particle analyses: Methodologies and applications in environmental research

Longyi Shao et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics, mixing state, and heterogeneous chemical reactions of individual aerosol particles obtained with electron microscopes. The techniques of individual particle analyses are briefly summarized and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The effects of aerosol particles on the environment, climate, human health, and global geochemical cycles are also discussed based on the data from individual particle analyses. Challenges faced in individual particle studies are prospected.

Heavy metal pollution levels, source apportionment and risk assessment in dust storms in key cities in Northwest China

Haiping Luo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that heavy metals in dust storms are mainly contaminated by human activities, with sources from industrial, transportation, natural, and agricultural sectors. The comprehensive ecological risk of heavy metals is low, but moderate and above risks exist at individual sites. Both adults and children face higher carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from the ingestion route, with children having higher risks than adults.

???????Surface chemistry of atmospheric nanoparticles during a haze episode in Beijing by TOF-SIMS

Wenjun Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed aerosol particles with different sizes during a haze episode in Beijing using the TOF-SIMS technique, and investigated the variations of chemical species with particle size and air pollution level. The results showed that the surface chemical components of PM2.5 were more complicated during haze episodes, with significant increases in organic and secondary ions in heavily polluted days.

Morphology and mineralogical composition of sandblasting dust particles from the Taklimakan Desert

Tafeng Hu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the physicochemical characteristics of dust particles from the Taklimakan Desert. The shape and mineralogical composition of the particles were statistically quantified. The particles from sand dunes and Gobi soils had different size distributions but similar shape distributions. Clay minerals, such as chlorite and kaolinite, were the most frequently found composition, followed by quartz and feldspar. Gypsum and halite were the major salt components in both soil types.

Variations in physicochemical properties of airborne particles during a heavy haze-to-dust episode in Beijing

Zihan Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the physicochemical properties of airborne particles during a typical transition from haze to dust in Beijing in February 2013, revealing significant changes in particle composition and size modes under different weather conditions. Dust intrusion led to an increase in mineral particles and freshly emitted particles with smaller sizes, while photochemical oxidation dominated secondary formation during the dust episode. This short-term study highlights the importance of considering abrupt changes in airborne particle properties for more accurate assessments of their environmental, climatic, and health-related effects.
