Trend Pattern of Heavy and Intense Rainfall Events in Colombia from 1981-2018: A Trend-EOF Approach

Wilmar L. Ceron et al.

Summary: This study assesses the spatio-temporal trends of heavy rainfall in Colombia over the past 38 years. The findings show an increase in maximum precipitation and the number of days with heavy rainfall in most regions, except for the Amazon. In some regions, such as the Andean and Caribbean, total rainfall has decreased during certain months, while in others, like the northern Pacific, it has increased. These results provide valuable insights into the impacts of climate extremes in tropical latitudes and can aid in future climate change planning.

Multi-angular polarimetric remote sensing to pinpoint global aerosol absorption and direct radiative forcing

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: Quantitative estimations of atmospheric aerosol absorption are uncertain due to a lack of reliable global distribution information. In this study, multi-angular polarimeters are used to provide constraints on the emission of absorbing aerosol species and estimate global aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD) and its climate effect. The findings suggest a higher AAOD than previous estimates, and the constraint provided by multi-angular polarimetry narrows the confidence interval of black carbon direct radiative forcing (BC DRF) and boosts confidence in its spatial distribution.

The polarization crossfire (PCF) sensor suite focusing on satellite remote sensing of fine particulate matter PM2.5 from space

Zhengqiang Li et al.

Summary: This article introduces the application of the polarization cross-fire (PCF) strategy in satellite remote sensing of fine particulate matter PM2.5. The PCF suite, consisting of the Particulate Observing Scanning Polarimeter (POSP) and the Directional Polarimetric Camera (DPC), is expected to be the first dedicated satellite sensor for globally remote sensing of PM2.5. By means of pixel matching and cross calibration, the PCF suite can obtain comprehensive joint measurements in the range of 380-2250 nm. The article also investigates the retrieval performances of key aerosol parameters using the optimal estimation inversion framework and synthetic data of PCF, and analyzes the propagation errors from aerosol parameters to PM2.5 retrieval as well as the influence of improving PCF calibration accuracy on PM2.5 retrievals.

A comparative study of EOF and NMF analysis on downward trend of AOD over China from 2011 to 2019

Qiao Ma et al.

Summary: This study used statistical methods to analyze the aerosol optical depth (AOD) over China and surrounding areas, finding that natural dust and anthropogenic emissions are important factors influencing AOD in China. Anthropogenic aerosols have the largest contribution to AOD anomaly variation, while in the areas surrounding China, aerosol transport significantly impacts AOD variations.

Yongchao Ma et al.

Summary: Based on ERA-5 meteorological data from 2015 to 2019, a global tropospheric delay SH coefficients set (SH_set) and empirical model (EGtrop) were established and validated, meeting the WAAS requirements. Validation using data from global sounding stations and IGS stations in 2020 confirmed the high accuracy and applicability of the new EGtrop model at both global and regional scales.

Biomass burning-derived airborne particulate matter in Southeast Asia: A critical review

Max G. Adam et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the impacts of smoke haze episodes caused by uncontrolled biomass burning in Southeast Asia, focusing on airborne particulate matter (PM). It reviews recent research on the environmental and health effects of BB-induced PM from 2010 to 2020, providing insights into the physical, chemical, toxicological, and radiative properties of BB-derived PM. Additionally, it outlines future research priorities and emphasizes the need for policies to prevent future BB events in the SEA region.

Record-breaking aerosol levels explained by smoke injection into the stratosphere

Eitan Hirsch et al.

Summary: The early months of 2020 saw record-breaking levels of aerosol optical depth (AOD) over the Southern Hemisphere, mainly due to the intensity and location of the Australian bushfires. The fires taking place in a region with relatively low tropopause altitude contributed to deep convection and transported smoke to the stratosphere, resulting in cooling over cloud-free oceanic areas.

Environmental Factors Controlling the Precipitation in California

Feng Hu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that winter precipitation in California is influenced by sea surface temperature in the central Pacific Ocean, with a negative relationship with sea surface temperature in the southeast Indian Ocean. The Pacific-North America mode driven by positive sea surface temperature and precipitation in the central Pacific Ocean leads to California being affected by southwesterlies, promoting precipitation. Conversely, when under a negative relationship, California is controlled by high biotrophic pressure, a part of the Rossby wave train induced by positive sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean, which hampers precipitation.
