Production of autoionizing states by double-electron capture in intermediate-energy C4++ He collisions

D. L. Guo et al.

Summary: We have conducted a kinematically complete experiment on state-selective double-electron capture in 15-keV/u C4+ + He collisions using cold-target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy. Our results reveal that capture into ground and low excited states of C2+ ions is the dominant process. Additionally, we clearly observed autoionization decays from doubly excited states with both symmetric and asymmetric electron configurations after endothermic double-electron capture. Our analysis suggests that electron-electron correlation effects play a significant role in the double-electron capture process. Moreover, the larger transverse recoil ion momentum observed in symmetric configurations compared to asymmetric configurations for the doubly excited autoionizing states may be attributed to the different number of steps involved in the primary capture process, with the former likely produced by a two-step mechanism and the latter by a one-step mechanism.

Uncertainties in Atomic Data for Modeling Astrophysical Charge Exchange Plasmas

Liyi Gu et al.

Summary: The uncertainties in theoretical atomic data are crucial for accurate plasma diagnostics, especially in astrophysical studies. This study presents a new calculation of the uncertainties in current theoretical ion-impact charge exchange atomic data and X-ray spectra, based on comparisons with existing laboratory data. The results show that the average systematic uncertainties are 35-88% for total cross sections and 57-75% for characteristic line ratios. Model deviation increases as collision energy decreases. The errors in total cross sections further contribute to significant uncertainty in the calculation of ionization balance in low-temperature collisional plasmas. Substantial improvements in the atomic database and dedicated laboratory measurements are needed to obtain current models for the next X-ray spectroscopic mission.

Measurement of n- and l-resolved State-selective Charge Exchange in Ar8+ Collision with He

Z. H. Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the charge exchange between Ar8+ ions and He using the cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy apparatus, revealing that electrons are predominantly captured in the n = 4 state of Ar7+ ions. Relative cross sections are reported for different states and the commonly used l distributions in astrophysical literature are evaluated against the experimental measurements.

Benchmark n l-resolved Cross Sections of Single and Double Charge Exchange Processes in 1.67-20 keV u-1 C4+ Collisions with He

D. L. Guo et al.

Summary: This study found that the latest atomic-orbital close-coupling calculations could reproduce the state-resolved single and double CX cross sections accurately, but the CX models failed to give a consistent description of the measured l distributions. It suggests that future modeling should include the effects of velocity, collision partner species dependence, and electronic correlations for multielectron processes to improve accuracy. Quantum-mechanical calculations may be more reliable for interpreting high-resolution astrophysical observations.

Measurement of n-resolved State-selective Charge Exchange in Ne(8,9)+ Collision with He and H2

J. W. Xu et al.

Summary: The study conducted experimental measurements of charge exchange between Ne-(8,Ne-9)+ ions and He and H-2 using a COLTRIMS apparatus, obtaining n-resolved state-selective capture cross sections and comparing them to calculations by the MCLZ method. The results showed good agreement between experimental and MCLZ calculations for the dominant n capture on He target, providing important data for soft X-ray emission research.

State-selective single-electron capture in intermediate-energy C4+ + He collisions

D. L. Guo et al.

Summary: A combined experimental and theoretical study on single-electron capture in 15-50 keV/uC(4+1) + He collisions was performed, showing excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical results for state-selective cross sections and angular differential cross sections. The simulations using an extended Fraunhofer-type diffraction model provided insights into the undulatory structures observed at small scattering angles. The strong competition between single-electron capture to different states of C3+ was also discussed to interpret the observed differences in their respective differential cross sections.
