An Empirical Background Model for the NICER X-Ray Timing Instrument

Ronald A. Remillard et al.

Summary: The study utilized an empirical three-parameter model based on observations to predict the background spectrum of the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. By applying filtering criteria to select background GTIs, the study estimated detection limits and identified the need for additional model parameters to improve predictions.

Acceleration and cooling of the corona during X-ray flares from the Seyfert galaxy I Zw 1

D. R. Wilkins et al.

Summary: We report on X-ray flares observed from I Zwicky 1 in January 2020. The flares are associated with changes in the corona, including an acceleration away from the accretion disc and a significant temperature drop. The emissivity profile of the accretion disc is also affected, suggesting an expansion of the corona during the flares.

Summary: Recently, an unprecedented supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidate was discovered in the nearby Seyfert galaxy SDSS J1430+2303, with a predicted merger within three years. X-ray spectroscopy revealed unique kinematic evidence and provided insights into the associated high-energy processes.

NuSTAR Observations of Intrinsically X-Ray Weak Quasar Candidates: An Obscuration-only Scenario

Chaojun Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilizes recent NuSTAR observations to investigate the hard X-ray weakness and spectral shapes of quasars PG 1001+054, PG 1254+047, and PHL 1811. The results suggest that these quasars are weak in hard X-rays, possibly due to X-ray obscuration. The study proposes an obscuration-only model to explain the soft and hard X-ray weakness uniformly.

A Physical Model for the UV/Optical Power Spectra of AGN

Christos Panagiotou et al.

Summary: The UV/optical variability of AGN has long been believed to be driven by X-ray illumination of the accretion disk. However, recent observations of nearby Seyfert galaxies challenge this paradigm. In order to investigate the connection between UV/optical and X-ray variability in AGN, a physical model was developed to reproduce the UV/optical power spectral densities (PSDs) assuming thermal reprocessing of X-rays in the disk. The model successfully reproduces the variability properties of NGC 5548 and provides constraints on the source physical parameters.

Possible X-Ray Quasi-periodic Eruptions in a Tidal Disruption Event Candidate

Joheen Chakraborty et al.

Summary: X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are high-amplitude soft X-ray flares associated with supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies. The cause of these flares remains uncertain, and a recent study found a fifth QPE candidate in a star-forming galaxy with a relatively low-mass nuclear black hole. The study observed QPE-like flares in soft X-rays and corresponding dips in the UV light curves, shedding light on the behavior and properties of QPEs in different galaxies.

Ionized outflows from active galactic nuclei as the essential elements of feedback

Sibasish Laha et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the current understanding of ionized outflows in active galactic nuclei, including observations, origins, and acceleration mechanisms. These outflows carry a significant amount of AGN power and provide negative feedback to their host galaxies. Exciting advancements in the field are expected with the commissioning of large telescope missions and high-resolution spectrographs.
