The core normal Type Ia supernova 2019np-an overall spherical explosion with an aspherical surface layer and an aspherical 56Ni core

Peter Hoeflich et al.

Summary: Optical spectropolarimetry of the normal thermonuclear supernova (SN) 2019np reveals a significant intrinsic continuum polarization, which remains stable throughout the observational period. The presence of a separate structure with a deviation from the continuum polarization axis is also suggested. The temporal evolution of the polarization spectra indicates an off-center delayed detonation scenario for SN2019np.

A JWST Near- and Mid-infrared Nebular Spectrum of the Type Ia Supernova 2021aefx

Lindsey A. Kwok et al.

Summary: We present JWST near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic observations of the nearby normal Type Ia supernova (SN) SN 2021aefx in the nebular phase at +255 days past maximum light. Our observations reveal previously unobserved regions and provide insights into the composition and structure of the supernova. These findings contribute to the understanding of supernova progenitor and explosion models.

Stable nickel production in type Ia supernovae: A smoking gun for the progenitor mass?

S. Blondin et al.

Summary: There is increasing evidence that white dwarf stars with masses below the Chandrasekhar limit contribute significantly to Type Ia supernova progenitors. The relative fraction of stable iron-group elements synthesized in the explosion may be used to differentiate between Chandrasekhar mass and sub-Chandrasekhar mass events. This study focuses on the explosive nucleosynthesis of stable nickel in Type Ia supernovae resulting from different progenitor masses, and investigates the potential use of [Ni II] lines as a diagnostic tool. The results show that stable nickel production is generally more efficient in Chandrasekhar mass explosions, but the lack of [Ni II] lines in late-time spectra of sub-Chandrasekhar mass events is not solely due to an under-abundance of stable nickel, but rather the higher ionization of nickel in the inner ejecta.

Spectropolarimetry of the Type Ia SN 2019ein rules out significant global asphericity of the ejecta

Kishore C. Patra et al.

Summary: Detailed spectropolarimetric studies of SN 2019ein reveal unique features such as nearly constant continuum polarization levels, high polarization across certain spectral lines, and possible evidence for aspherical interior post-explosion. These observations provide insights into the explosion mechanisms and progenitor scenarios of Type Ia supernovae.

Summary: This study investigates the fate of positrons within Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and evaluates their escape fractions and energy spectra. Monte Carlo transport simulations are used to study the influence of different explosion scenarios and progenitor magnetic fields. Population synthesis based on observed brightness distribution is used to estimate the overall contributions of SNe Ia to Galactic positrons.

Constraining the Progenitor System of the Type Ia Supernova 2021aefx

Griffin Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: We present high-cadence optical and ultraviolet light curves of the normal Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021aefx, which shows an early bump during the first two days of observation. This bump may be a signature of interaction between the exploding white dwarf and a nondegenerate binary companion, but no current model can explain all of our observations.

A Speed Bump: SN 2021aefx Shows that Doppler Shift Alone Can Explain Early Excess Blue Flux in Some Type Ia Supernovae

C. Ashall et al.

Summary: We present early-time observations of the Type Ia supernova 2021aefx, showing an excess flux in the u-band light curve. We suggest that this excess flux may be due to a rapid change in spectral velocity, caused by the emission of Ca ii H&K feature passing through different bands. This effect could be dominant for SNe Ia with broad absorption features and high early-time velocities.

Metallicity-dependent nucleosynthetic yields of Type Ia supernovae originating from double detonations of sub-MCh white dwarfs

Sabrina Gronow et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential explosion mechanisms of Type Ia supernovae from sub-Chandrasekhar mass carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and finds a significant impact of progenitor metallicity on nucleosynthetic yields. Experimental data demonstrate a strong influence of metallicity on yields, with an increase in Mn-55 production with metallicity. The results suggest that the contribution of Type Ia supernovae from these white dwarfs might be lower than previously estimated.

Physics of Thermonuclear Explosions: Magnetic Field Effects on Deflagration Fronts and Observable Consequences

Boyan Hristov et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of magnetic field strength and morphology on Type Ia supernovae and their late-time light curves and spectra is investigated. It is found that the topology of the magnetic field is determined by the burning process, independent of initial strength, during the early deflagration phase. Late-time spectra show the imprint of both magnetic field strength and morphology, with inferred magnetic field strengths having a lower limit of 10^6 G.

Measuring an Off-center Detonation through Infrared Line Profiles: The Peculiar Type Ia Supernova SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq

P. Hoeflich et al.

Summary: In this study, a near-infrared spectrum of the underluminous Type Ia supernova SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq obtained with NIRES at the Keck Observatory is presented and analyzed. The analysis reveals good agreement between observed lines and synthetic profiles, allowing for the unraveling of the progenitor's envelope structure and determination of important properties of the white dwarf. The findings shed light on the asymmetric distribution of ejecta and strong overlap of Ca and Ni-56 in low-luminosity, high-density white dwarf supernova Ia progenitors.

Multidimensional Parameter Study of Double Detonation Type Ia Supernovae Originating from Thin Helium Shell White Dwarfs

Samuel J. Boos et al.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility of double detonation scenario in Type Ia supernovae by simulating thin-He-shell, sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf progenitors. The results confirm the viability of double detonation across a range of parameter space and provide bulk yields and ejecta profiles for each progenitor. Significant differences in the high-velocity extent of postdetonation products across different lines of sight are found, indicating the impact of viewing angle on observable characteristics.
