Discovery of a Long-duration Superflare on a Young Solar-type Star EK Draconis with Nearly Similar Time Evolution for Hα and White-light Emissions

Kosuke Namekata et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of a long-duration superflare on the young solar-type star EK Draconis. The energy and duration of the flare are much larger than those of solar flares, making it the largest superflare ever detected by optical spectroscopy. The unexpected time evolution suggests different radiation mechanisms compared to solar flares.

The impact of coronal mass ejections and flares on the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HD189733b

Gopal Hazra et al.

Summary: High-energy stellar irradiation can evaporate planetary atmospheres, and the temporal variation in evaporation may be influenced by flares, CMEs, or both. In this study, radiation hydrodynamic simulations were used to investigate the impact of flares, winds, and CMEs on the atmosphere of HD189733b. The results show that flares only slightly increase the evaporation rate, while CMEs significantly enhance it. Additionally, the observed high blueshifted velocities in the Ly alpha line cannot be fully explained by flares alone, but CMEs can contribute to the enhanced blueshifted transit depths.

Sun-as-a-star Analysis of Hα Spectra of a Solar Flare Observed by SMART/SDDI: Time Evolution of Red Asymmetry and Line Broadening

Kosuke Namekata et al.

Summary: It has been found that red/blue asymmetries can be observed in the H alpha line profiles of stellar flares, indicating chromospheric dynamics and prominence activations. By analyzing the H alpha spectra of a solar flare using the Sun-as-a-star approach, it was discovered that the redshift velocities and line widths of the flare region are smaller when compared to those with strong intensity. The temporal evolution of these spectral behaviors could provide insights into the origin of the H alpha red asymmetry in stellar flares.

Constraining the Physical Properties of Stellar Coronal Mass Ejections with Coronal Dimming: Application to Far-ultraviolet Data of ε Eridani

R. O. Parke Loyd et al.

Summary: Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are important for solar system space weather and may have influenced the Sun's early angular momentum evolution. This study analyzed coronal dimming of Fe XII and Fe XXI emission from the young K2 dwarf epsilon Eridani using far-ultraviolet observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. The results show an 81% decline in Fe XXI emission after a flare in 2015 February.

Universal Scaling Laws for Solar and Stellar Atmospheric Heating: Catalog of Power-law Index between Solar Activity Proxies and Various Spectral Irradiances

Shin Toriumi et al.

Summary: The formation of extremely hot outer atmospheres in late-type dwarf stars, including the Sun, is a common manifestation of magnetic activity. These atmospheric layers are heated by energy dissipation from the stellar surface via the magnetic field. The spectral line fluxes at various wavelengths show universal power-law relationships with the surface magnetic flux, and this study provides a catalog of power-law indices for different solar activity proxies and spectral line fluxes.

Time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of M dwarf flare star YZ Canis Minoris with OISTER and TESS: Blue asymmetry in the H alpha line during the non-white light flare

Hiroyuki Maehara et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the M-type flare star YZ CMi within the OISTER collaborations during the TESS observation period. The study found a blue asymmetry in one of the H alpha flares associated with white-light flares on YZ CMi, suggesting upward flows of chromospheric cool plasma even without detectable red/near-infrared continuum brightening. Estimated mass and kinetic energy of the upward-moving material were comparable to expectations from empirical relations for stellar flares and solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The estimated kinetic energy for the non-white-light flare on YZ CMi was smaller than expected from the relation for solar CMEs, possibly due to differences in velocity between CMEs and prominence eruptions.
