The Origin and Evolution of the Normal Type Ia SN 2018aoz with Infant-phase Reddening and Excess Emission

Yuan Qi Ni et al.

Summary: SN 2018aoz is a Type Ia SN with unique light curves, and the nature and origin of the SN are constrained by the distribution of iron-peak elements and spectroscopic features. The possible origin and explosion mechanisms are related to the interaction between the binary companion and circumstellar material.

Discovery of a Double-detonation Thermonuclear Supernova Progenitor

Thomas Kupfer et al.

Summary: We present the discovery of a new double-detonation progenitor system composed of a hot subdwarf B binary and a white dwarf companion. By analyzing the spectroscopic observations and light curve fits, the physical parameters of the system were estimated and the future evolution was predicted. These findings are important for understanding the formation mechanisms of double-detonation progenitor systems and thermonuclear supernovae.

Infant-phase reddening by surface Fe-peak elements in a normal type Ia supernova

Yuan Qi Ni et al.

Summary: Type Ia supernovae, as thermonuclear explosions of white dwarf stars, are important for the chemical evolution of the Universe and cosmological distance measurements. However, their origins still remain uncertain. By studying the infant-phase detections of SN 2018aoz, it has been discovered that a previously unseen plateau in the B band and a rapid redward color evolution occurred shortly after the estimated first light. The presence of excess nucleosynthetic material in the outer layers of the ejecta suggests enhanced surface nuclear burning or extended subsonic mixing processes in some normal type Ia supernova explosions.

Physical Properties of the Host Galaxies of Ca-rich Transients

Yuxin Dong et al.

Summary: Calcium-rich transients are a new class of supernovae that exhibit rapid evolution, modest peak luminosities, and strong calcium emission lines. Their progenitor systems remain unknown, but their spectroscopic properties suggest a connection to older stellar populations. This study compiles multiwavelength observations of host galaxies of Ca-rich transients and characterizes their stellar populations. The results support the idea that Ca-rich transients do not exclusively originate from core-collapse explosions, but may come from white dwarf stars or a mixed population of white dwarfs and other channels.

Constraining Type Ia supernova explosions and early flux excesses with the Zwicky Transient Factory

M. Deckers et al.

Summary: In the new era of time-domain surveys, Type Ia supernovae are being caught sooner after explosion, revealing significant variation in their early light curves. The distribution of Ni-56 in the ejecta and the presence of flux excesses are identified as the two driving factors for early-time evolution. Analysis of a large sample of young SN Ia shows that most observed light curves can be well reproduced by Chandrasekhar mass explosion models with highly extended Ni-56 distributions. The study also finds a higher frequency of flux excesses in 91T/99aa-like events.

Constraining the Progenitor System of the Type Ia Supernova 2021aefx

Griffin Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: We present high-cadence optical and ultraviolet light curves of the normal Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021aefx, which shows an early bump during the first two days of observation. This bump may be a signature of interaction between the exploding white dwarf and a nondegenerate binary companion, but no current model can explain all of our observations.

A Speed Bump: SN 2021aefx Shows that Doppler Shift Alone Can Explain Early Excess Blue Flux in Some Type Ia Supernovae

C. Ashall et al.

Summary: We present early-time observations of the Type Ia supernova 2021aefx, showing an excess flux in the u-band light curve. We suggest that this excess flux may be due to a rapid change in spectral velocity, caused by the emission of Ca ii H&K feature passing through different bands. This effect could be dominant for SNe Ia with broad absorption features and high early-time velocities.

Multidimensional Radiative Transfer Calculations of Double Detonations of Sub-Chandrasekhar-mass White Dwarfs

Ken J. Shen et al.

Summary: The study of double-detonation Type Ia supernova scenario has seen a resurgence in the past decade, with new evolutionary scenarios and a better understanding of essential nuclear reactions leading to successful explosions in white dwarfs with much thinner helium shells. Through multidimensional radiative transfer calculations, this study presents light curves and spectra from thin-shell double-detonation models, showing broad agreement with observed Type Ia supernovae across a range of WD and helium-shell masses. Some discrepancies in spectral velocities and colors remain, but may be addressed by future calculations with more accurate initial conditions and radiation transport physics.

Discovery of the Fastest Early Optical Emission from Overluminous SN Ia 2020hvf: A Thermonuclear Explosion within a Dense Circumstellar Environment

Ji-an Jiang et al.

Summary: This Letter reports the discovery of a peculiar overluminous Type Ia supernova, SN 2020hvf, with a prominent flash observed in the early stages after the supernova explosion. Numerical simulations suggest that the early flash is likely generated from the interaction between circumstellar material and supernova ejecta, indicating a confined dense environmental formation around the progenitor of SN 2020hvf. The findings imply that SN 2020hvf may originate from a super-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf, and further investigations are needed to understand the explosion mechanisms and progenitor of this peculiar supernova.

Exploring the diversity of double-detonation explosions for Type Ia supernovae: effects of the post-explosion helium shell composition

M. R. Magee et al.

Summary: The detonation of a helium shell on top of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf is proposed as a potential explosion mechanism for some Type Ia supernovae. Radiative transfer models are used to mimic predictions from double-detonation explosion models and explore a range of core and shell masses with different compositions. Models with shells containing specific elements can reproduce the observed light-curve bumps in SNe Ia, particularly those with red colors around maximum light. The study suggests that the double-detonation scenario may be viable for a wide range of normal SNe Ia if the helium shell ash does not contain iron-group elements.

Summary: This study presents the photometric properties and mass distributions of host galaxies of various types of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Differences in preferences for galaxy properties were found among different SN classes, with Type Ib/c SNe preferring galaxies with higher masses and metallicities. H-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) were scarce in galaxies with high masses, requiring environments with low metallicities and younger stellar populations as progenitors.
