Scaling laws for the energy transfer in space plasma turbulence

Raffaele Marino et al.

Summary: One characteristic trait of space plasmas is the multi-scale dynamics resulting from non-linear transfers and conversions of various forms of energy. Turbulence is a major cross-scale energy transfer mechanism in space plasmas, affecting the energy fate at intermediate scales. Other mechanisms, such as magnetic reconnection and particle energization, also contribute to the challenging prediction of the dynamical state of space plasmas. In recent decades, scaling laws and advanced methodologies have played a crucial role in characterizing the energy transfer in space plasmas, together with robotic missions.

Variability of the Incompressible Energy Cascade Rate in Solar Wind Turbulence around Mars

Norberto Romanelli et al.

Summary: In this study, a statistical analysis is conducted on the variability of the incompressible energy cascade rate in the solar wind around Mars, using more than five years of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations. The results show that the incompressible energy cascade rate decreases as the Martian heliocentric distance increases. Furthermore, it is suggested that proton cyclotron waves, associated with the extended Martian hydrogen exosphere, do not have a significant effect on the nonlinear cascade of energy at the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scales.

The Evolution of Compressible Solar Wind Turbulence in the Inner Heliosphere: PSP, THEMIS, and MAVEN Observations

N. Andres et al.

Summary: The compressible energy transfer rate from different heliocentric distances was calculated using PSP, THEMIS, and MAVEN observations, showing moderate increases with respect to the incompressible cascade rate. The impact of plasma compressibility on the total cascade rate was demonstrated, and the results were connected with local ion temperature and solar wind heating.

General Exact Law of Compressible Isentropic Magnetohydrodynamic Flows: Theory and Spacecraft Observations in the Solar Wind

P. Simon et al.

Summary: This study presents a more general method for deriving laws governing turbulent isentropic flow, demonstrating that known MHD exact laws are specific cases of this general law. The difference between different forms of MHD exact laws lies in certain source terms and the explicit form of the flux term dependent on internal energy.

Spectral Transfer and Karman-Howarth-Monin Equations for Compressible Hall Magnetohydrodynamics

Petr Hellinger et al.

Summary: Two new forms of the KHM equation for decaying compressible Hall MHD turbulence were derived and tested on simulation results, showing complementary cumulative behavior with the isotropic ST equation. These equations are automatically satisfied during the simulation and provide equivalent results characterizing various aspects of turbulence behavior.
