Correlated Spatio-temporal Evolution of Extreme-Ultraviolet Ribbons and Hard X-Rays in a Solar Flare

S. J. Naus et al.

Summary: We analyzed the structure and evolution of ribbons from the M7.3 flare and found that the ribbon width is highly intermittent and closely related to nonthermal hard X-ray emissions. Our results suggest a strong connection between the production of nonthermal electrons and the locally enhanced perpendicular extent of flare ribbon fronts.

Variability of the Reconnection Guide Field in Solar Flares

Joel T. Dahlin et al.

Summary: Solar flares are commonly known examples of explosive conversion of magnetic energy into motion, heating, and particle acceleration. This study presents simulations that reveal the evolution of the magnetic shear/guide field during an eruptive flare, and discusses the implications of the variability of the guide field for particle acceleration.

Properties and Energetics of Magnetic Reconnection: I. Evolution of Flare Ribbons

J. Qiu et al.

Summary: In this article, the mean magnetic shear is measured by analyzing the morphological evolution of flare ribbons, and the evolution of thermal and nonthermal X-ray emissions during flare reconnection is examined. The results show that the decrease of shear leads to an increase in flare hard X-ray emission, and in eruptive flares, nonthermal hard X-ray emission lags behind the ultraviolet emission from flare ribbons and rises rapidly when the shear is modest.

Is Flare Ribbon Fine Structure Related to Tearing in the Flare Current Sheet?

P. F. Wyper et al.

Summary: Observations of solar flare ribbons show significant fine structure, such as breaking wavelike perturbations and spirals. It is suggested that this structure is related to tearing instability in the flare current sheet, with a direct link between flare ribbon fine structure and tearing modes. The size, location, and twist of small-scale flux ropes can influence the formation of wavelike and spiral features within the flare ribbon.

Electron Acceleration during Macroscale Magnetic Reconnection

H. Arnold et al.

Summary: The study presents the first self-consistent simulations of electron acceleration during magnetic reconnection in a macroscale system. It suggests that nonthermal electrons are mainly driven by Fermi reflection in growing and merging magnetic flux ropes. A strong guide field suppresses the production of nonthermal electrons, while in a weak guide field, the total energy content of nonthermal electrons dominates.
