The updated BASTI stellar evolution models and isochrones - III. White dwarfs

Maurizio Salaris et al.

Summary: This paper presents new cooling models for carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (WDs) with both H- and He-atmospheres. The models cover the whole relevant mass range and extend the updated BASTI stellar evolution archive. The core chemical stratifications are obtained from new progenitor calculations, and the physics inputs have been updated compared to previous BASTI calculations. Two sets of calculations are provided, reflecting the current uncertainty in the evaluation of the electron thermal conductivity.

Stellar core-merger-induced collapse: new formation pathways for black holes, Thorne-Zytkow objects, magnetars, and superluminous supernovae

Iminhaji Ablimit et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new formation channel for BHs and peculiar NSs, called the core-merger-induced collapse (CMIC) model. By merging an oxygen/neon/magnesium composition white dwarf with the core of a hydrogen-rich or helium-rich non-degenerate star during the common-envelope phase, unique new types of objects are created. Simulation results show that the CMIC channel could significantly contribute to the populations of pulsars, TZOs, magnetars, and BHs.

Slowly Cooling White Dwarfs in NGC 6752

Jianxing Chen et al.

Summary: By studying the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6752, it has been found that there are slowly cooling white dwarfs similar to those in M13. The similar white dwarf luminosity function and stellar mass distribution along the horizontal branch in NGC 6752 and M13 provide further evidence of a direct causal connection between the phenomenon of slowly cooling white dwarfs and the host stellar cluster's morphology.

Discovery of a Double Sequence of Blue Straggler Stars in the Core-collapsed Globular Cluster NGC 6256

Mario Cadelano et al.

Summary: Using high-resolution optical images from the Hubble Space Telescope and near-IR wide-field data, we studied the stellar density and blue straggler star population in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6256. The cluster is currently in the post-core-collapse phase and the distribution of blue straggler stars shows a collimated blue sequence and a red more sparse component.

Slowly cooling white dwarfs in M13 from stable hydrogen burning

Jianxing Chen et al.

Summary: White dwarfs are the final evolutionary product of most stars, characterized by cooling process and used as cosmic chronometer in various Galactic populations. Analysis of high-resolution data of two similar globular clusters (M3 and M13) revealed unexpected overabundance of bright WDs in M13, possibly due to stable thermonuclear activity slowing down cooling rate. This observational evidence of quiescent thermonuclear activity in cooling WDs highlights the importance of WD cooling rate as cosmic chronometer in low-metallicity environments.
