Discovery of a Long-duration Superflare on a Young Solar-type Star EK Draconis with Nearly Similar Time Evolution for Hα and White-light Emissions

Kosuke Namekata et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of a long-duration superflare on the young solar-type star EK Draconis. The energy and duration of the flare are much larger than those of solar flares, making it the largest superflare ever detected by optical spectroscopy. The unexpected time evolution suggests different radiation mechanisms compared to solar flares.

The Atmospheric Response to High Nonthermal Electron-beam Fluxes in Solar Flares. II. Hydrogen-broadening Predictions for Solar Flare Observations with the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope

Adam F. Kowalski et al.

Summary: We studied the redshifted components of chromospheric emission lines in solar flares and found that they are generally caused by electron-beam-generated chromospheric condensations. Our observations also suggest that the pressure broadening of the hydrogen Balmer series can be used to accurately interpret the upcoming spectral data of flares.

Sun-as-a-star Analysis of Hα Spectra of a Solar Flare Observed by SMART/SDDI: Time Evolution of Red Asymmetry and Line Broadening

Kosuke Namekata et al.

Summary: It has been found that red/blue asymmetries can be observed in the H alpha line profiles of stellar flares, indicating chromospheric dynamics and prominence activations. By analyzing the H alpha spectra of a solar flare using the Sun-as-a-star approach, it was discovered that the redshift velocities and line widths of the flare region are smaller when compared to those with strong intensity. The temporal evolution of these spectral behaviors could provide insights into the origin of the H alpha red asymmetry in stellar flares.

Sun-as-a-star Analyses of Various Solar Active Events Using Hα Spectral Images Taken by SMART/SDDI

Takato Otsu et al.

Summary: Sun-as-a-star analyses are helpful in interpreting stellar data, and through analyzing H alpha spectra of various active events on the Sun, it is possible to identify active phenomena on Sun-like stars. Additionally, it has been observed that filament eruptions, even with redshifted absorptions, can lead to coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

Search for flares and associated CMEs on late-type main-sequence stars in optical SDSS spectra

Florian Koller et al.

Summary: This study aims to detect and classify stellar flares and potential coronal mass ejection (CME) signatures in optical spectra from the SDSS data release 14, focusing on over 630,000 F, G, K, and M main-sequence stars. Significant amplitude changes in Hα and Hβ spectral lines were used to identify flares, while asymmetries in Balmer lines were searched for to detect CME candidates. The study identified 281 flares and 6 possible CME candidates in late-type stars.

When Hot Meets Cold: Post-flare Coronal Rain

Wenzhi Ruan et al.

Summary: This study reports on a simulation of a solar flare evolving from pre-flare to impulsive phase and into the gradual phase, successfully reproducing post-flare coronal rain. Catastrophic cooling due to thermal instability leads to the formation of the rain, driving the sudden condensation phenomenon. The runaway cooling and rain formation also result in the appearance of dark post-flare loop systems, confirming earlier observational findings regarding the dominance of thermal conduction and radiative losses in the cooling of PFLs.

Time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of M dwarf flare star YZ Canis Minoris with OISTER and TESS: Blue asymmetry in the H alpha line during the non-white light flare

Hiroyuki Maehara et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the M-type flare star YZ CMi within the OISTER collaborations during the TESS observation period. The study found a blue asymmetry in one of the H alpha flares associated with white-light flares on YZ CMi, suggesting upward flows of chromospheric cool plasma even without detectable red/near-infrared continuum brightening. Estimated mass and kinetic energy of the upward-moving material were comparable to expectations from empirical relations for stellar flares and solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The estimated kinetic energy for the non-white-light flare on YZ CMi was smaller than expected from the relation for solar CMEs, possibly due to differences in velocity between CMEs and prominence eruptions.

Statistical Properties of Superflares on Solar-type Stars: Results Using All of the Kepler Primary Mission Data

Soshi Okamoto et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on solar-type and Sun-like stars to analyze superflares using Kepler and Gaia data, finding that the frequency of superflares decreases as the stellar rotation period increases. The maximum energy of superflares on Sun-like stars was found to be 4 x 10^34 erg, with the Sun potentially causing similar X700-class and X1000-class flares every approximately 3000 and 6000 years, respectively.
