Axion-Photon Conversion of LHAASO Multi-TeV and PeV Photons

Guangshuai Zhang et al.

Summary: The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has detected a large number of multi-TeV-scale photon events, including several PeV-scale gamma-ray-photon events with energy as high as 1.4 PeV. There is a possibility that some of these events may have extragalactic origins. A proposed mechanism based on axion-photon conversion scenario explains the traveling of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy photons, allowing their detection on Earth. This mechanism serves as an alternative explanation, along with Lorentz invariance violation, for the very-high-energy features of the newly observed gamma ray burst GRB 221009A.

Searching Lorentz invariance violation from cosmic photon attenuation

Hao Li et al.

Summary: In this work, the effect of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) on cosmic photon attenuations by extragalactic background light (EBL) is studied, and the identification of LIV from observations of very high energy (VHE) photons propagated from long distance is discussed. It is pointed out that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is an ideal facility for performing such LIV searching. The proposed strategy is applied to analyze the newly observed gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A to demonstrate the predictive ability.

Testing Lorentz invariance of electrons with LHAASO observations of PeV gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula

Chengyi Li et al.

Summary: The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) recently reported the detection of gamma-ray emissions with energies up to 1.1 PeV from the Crab Nebula. By studying the absence of vacuum Cherenkov effect, the researchers have improved the constraints on linear-order Lorentz invariance violation in the dispersion relations of electrons. The results show that the Lorentz invariance violation on electrons is severely constrained and compatible with certain models of quantum gravity.

Lorentz Symmetry Violation of Cosmic Photons

Ping He et al.

Summary: As a fundamental symmetry of space-time, Lorentz symmetry plays a crucial role in physics. Despite withstanding rigorous tests, the question of whether Lorentz symmetry breaks still remains and attracts physicists to study Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) through theoretical considerations and experimental feasibility. There are various theoretical models that include LV effects and predict different phenomena, allowing for verification and constraint of LV effects. High-energy particles from astronomical sources, particularly cosmic photons, are utilized for LV phenomenological research due to their energy and long propagation distance. Various astronomical observations provide rich data for obtaining constraints on LV effects of photons.

Novel pre-burst stage of gamma-ray bursts from machine learning

Yingtian Chen et al.

Summary: Gamma-ray bursts are believed to have two stages: the prompt phase and the subsequent afterglow. Recent studies suggest that some high-energy photons are emitted earlier than the prompt phase, leading to the proposal of a previously unknown pre-burst stage of GRBs. Analysis using machine learning also reveals a light speed variation at E-LV = 3.55 x 10(17) GeV.

Threshold anomalies of ultra-high energy cosmic photons due to Lorentz invariance violation

Hao Li et al.

Summary: Special relativity prevents high-energy photons from propagating far in cosmic space, but modifications to the photon dispersion relation due to Lorentz invariance violation can lead to novel phenomena such as optical transparency and threshold reduction. Recent observations by the LHAASO Collaboration highlight the importance of considering threshold anomalies, and future observations of photons above threshold from extragalactic sources can help verify the LIV properties of photons.

Pre-burst events of gamma-ray bursts with light speed variation

Jie Zhu et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that high-energy photons appear earlier than low-energy photons at the source of GRBs, but in the scenario of energy-dependent light speed variation, high-energy photons travel slower than low-energy photons and are typically detected later. Recent research analyzing high-energy photon events observed earlier than low-energy photons from FGST supports the pre-burst scenario of high-energy photons from GRBs and the energy dependence of light speed.
