A Projected Nesterov-Kaczmarz Approach to Stellar Population-Kinematic Distribution Reconstruction in Extragalactic Archaeology

Fabian Hinterer et al.

Summary: In this paper, the problem of reconstructing a galaxy's stellar population-kinematic distribution function from optical integral field unit measurements is investigated. A projected Nesterov-Kaczmarz reconstruction method is proposed to efficiently solve the high-dimensional integral equation and incorporate physical prior information. The performance of the reconstruction approach is tested using a simulated dataset and compared to the widely used pPXF software.

Probabilistic mass-mapping with neural score estimation

B. Remy et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel methodology that efficiently samples the high-dimensional Bayesian posterior of weak lensing mass-mapping problem, using a non-Gaussian prior based on simulations. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms previous algorithms in terms of root-mean-square error and Pearson correlation, and successfully reconstructs the highest-quality convergence map of the HST/ACS COSMOS field.

Detecting low-mass haloes with strong gravitational lensing I: the effect of data quality and lensing configuration

Giulia Despali et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the detection of low-mass dark matter halos using galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing, finding that the lowest detectable mass is related to signal-to-noise ratio and resolution, with higher sensitivity to bright and complex lensed galaxies. The results highlight the challenging nature of precise forecasting for gravitational imaging and suggest possible strategies for designing strong lensing surveys.

The Fornax3D project: Discovery of ancient massive merger events in the Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427

Ling Zhu et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of ancient massive merger events in the early-type galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427, and analyze their stellar orbits, age, and metallicity distributions. The formation of the hot inner stellar halo in both galaxies is found to require previous mergers with massive satellite galaxies, with estimated merger masses of about one-fifth and one-fourth of their current stellar masses for NGC 1380 and NGC 1427 respectively. The last major merger in NGC 1380 is the first one quantitatively inferred beyond the local volume, and it is the oldest and most massive merger uncovered in nearby galaxies so far.

Smallest k-Enclosing Rectangle Revisited

Timothy M. Chan et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the algorithm for computing the minimum perimeter or area axis-aligned rectangle enclosing k points, presenting a new near quadratic time algorithm and investigating different variations of the problem. It introduces a new reduction method for perimeter and area, making the time bound sensitive to k, and also proposes a near linear time approximation algorithm for the minimum area of the optimal rectangle containing k points.

BAYES-LOSVD: A Bayesian framework for non-parametric extraction of the line-of-sight velocity distribution of galaxies

J. Falcon-Barroso et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a novel method called BAYES-LOSVD for extracting line-of-sight velocity distributions (LOSVDs) in galaxies non-parametrically. It employs Bayesian inference to obtain robust LOSVDs and relies on principal component analysis to reduce dimensionality of template sets. The method can handle a wide range of LOSVD shapes and shows better performance compared to traditional parametric methods in tests.

Sparse Bayesian mass mapping with uncertainties: hypothesis testing of structure

M. A. Price et al.

Summary: A new method for reconstructing maximum a posteriori (MAP) convergence maps has been presented, allowing for theoretically conservative uncertainties without relying on Gaussian assumptions. The method also enables hypothesis testing of structure and was applied to observational data sets of the Abell 520 cluster, finding inconclusive evidence for the physicality of dark cores. The recovered MAP estimators were consistent with both data sets in both cases.
