SN 2020uem: a Possible Thermonuclear Explosion within a Dense Circumstellar Medium. I. The Nature of Type IIn/Ia-CSM SNe from Photometry and Spectroscopy

Kohki Uno et al.

Summary: We conducted intensive follow-up observations of a Type IIn/Ia-CSM supernova (SN IIn/Ia-CSM), 2020uem, using photometry, spectroscopy, and polarimetry. Our focus was on the optical/near-infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy. The light curves of SN 2020uem decline slowly with an accelerated decay in the late phase, and its spectra show prominent hydrogen emission lines. The NIR spectrum indicates the presence of newly formed carbon dust.

A WC/WO star exploding within an expanding carbon-oxygen-neon nebula

A. Gal-Yam et al.

Summary: The final fate of massive stars and the compact remnants they leave behind are still unanswered questions in astrophysics. Observations of SN 2019hgp suggest that it is an explosion from a massive WC/WO star within a nebula composed of carbon, oxygen, and neon, indicating that massive Wolf-Rayet stars may be the progenitors of some rapidly evolving transients.

Properties of Type Ibn Supernovae: Implications for the Progenitor Evolution and the Origin of a Population of Rapid Transients

Keiichi Maeda et al.

Summary: The paper presents a model for the interaction between the supernova ejecta and circumstellar matter (CSM) in type Ibn supernovae. The model explains the post-peak behavior commonly seen in the light curves and infers a rapid increase in the mass-loss rate as a generic property of the progenitors. The study also suggests the existence of a missing population of UV-bright rapid transients.

On the Energy Source of Ultrastripped Supernovae

Ryo Sawada et al.

Summary: This study investigates the explosion simulations and nucleosynthesis of ultrastripped supernovae. It finds that more massive supernovae have larger ejecta mass but smaller Ni-56 mass. By comparing the synthetic light curves with observed ones, it shows that SN 2019dge can be solely powered by Ni-56, while iPTF 14gqr cannot be explained by Ni-56. The study also considers fallback accretion and rotation-powered relativistic wind as alternative energy sources for iPTF 14gqr.

The Type Icn SN 2021csp: Implications for the Origins of the Fastest Supernovae and the Fates of Wolf-Rayet Stars

Daniel A. Perley et al.

Summary: We present observations of SN 2021csp, a newly identified type of supernova with unique carbon features and fast-evolving characteristics. The results suggest that its origin may be distinct from classical supernovae and more similar to other fast-evolving interacting transients. Possible progenitor scenarios are discussed.

SN 2021foa, a transitional event between a Type IIn (SN 2009ip-like) and a Type Ibn supernova

A. Reguitti et al.

Summary: We present photometric and spectroscopic data of the unusual interacting supernova SN 2021foa. The light curve of SN 2021foa shows similarities to SN 2009ip-like events, with a faint and shorter duration brightening followed by a much brighter peak. The early spectra of SN 2021foa show a blue continuum with narrow H emission lines, and later observations reveal a complex profile with emission lines of metal and strong He I lines.

Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients and Type Ibn/Icn SNe from Wolf-Rayet/Black Hole Mergers

Brian D. Metzger

Summary: This article proposes progenitor models for the luminous subclass of Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs), specifically the prototype AT2018cow. It suggests that the tidal disruption and hyper-accretion of a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star by a black hole or neutron star binary companion can explain the observed properties of LFBOTs, such as fast optical rise times, high peak luminosities, low yields of Ni-56, aspherical ejecta, hydrogen-depleted circumstellar material (CSM), and the presence of X-ray/gamma-ray sources.

The Diverse Properties of Type Icn Supernovae Point to Multiple Progenitor Channels

C. Pellegrino et al.

Summary: This study presents a newly discovered class of transients called Type Icn supernovae (SNe Icn), characterized by their interaction with H- and He-poor circumstellar material. The sample includes two published objects and two objects not yet published in the literature. By fitting their bolometric light curves to a semianalytical model, the study infers low ejecta masses and Ni-56 masses for SNe Icn, suggesting that they cannot be powered by normal stripped-envelope supernova explosions. The study also suggests different progenitor scenarios for different SNe Icn based on their observed properties.

Late-time H/He-poor Circumstellar Interaction in the Type Ic Supernova SN 2021ocs: An Exposed Oxygen-Magnesium Layer and Extreme Stripping of the Progenitor*

H. Kuncarayakti et al.

Summary: SN 2021ocs, a normal Type Ic supernova, was discovered in the galaxy NGC 7828, exhibiting unique oxygen and magnesium emission lines in its spectrum. It also displayed an atypical blue color after the peak, suggesting late-time interaction with a H/He-poor circumstellar medium. This is the first reported case of its kind, highlighting the significance of late-time spectroscopy in studying supernovae.

SN 2020bqj: A Type Ibn supernova with a long-lasting peak plateau

E. C. Kool et al.

Summary: SN 2020bqj is a rare Type Ibn supernova with a long-duration peak plateau lasting 40 days, hosted by a faint low-mass galaxy. Its properties are peculiar compared to other SNe Ibn, but modeling suggests it can be powered by shock heating from SN ejecta-CSM interaction combined with radioactive decay. The similarities with SN 2011hw suggest a distinct progenitor scenario for this subclass.
