SRG/eROSITA X-ray shadowing study of giant molecular clouds

M. C. H. Yeung et al.

Summary: SRG/eROSITA is studying the soft X-ray emissions from the local hot bubble (LHB) and the heliospheric SWCX emissions using eRASS data. Spectral analysis was conducted on the diffuse X-ray spectra of three giant molecular clouds to isolate and study the soft X-ray foreground emission. The density of the LHB was found to be independent of the sight line, but the temperature varied.

Characterizing the patchy appearance of the circumgalactic medium and the influence of foreground absorption

G. Ponti et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that the emission from the circumgalactic medium exhibits a high degree of patchiness on angular scales of about 10 degrees. This study aims to investigate the variation in X-ray surface brightness over a range of scales using the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey. The results show that the surface brightness in the soft X-ray band displays modulations of about 60% on several degree scales.

Mass, morphing, metallicities: the evolution of infalling high velocity clouds

F. Heitsch et al.

Summary: We reexamine the reliability of metallicity estimates of high velocity clouds by using hydrodynamical simulations. We find that the metallicity estimates are affected by accretion and viewing angle. The evolutionary state and position of the cloud can affect the metallicity estimates. The contamination of the cloud increases linearly with time and from head to tail.

Star formation near the Sun is driven by expansion of the Local Bubble

Catherine Zucker et al.

Summary: This research analyzes the three-dimensional positions, shapes, and motions of dense gas and young stars within 200 pc of the Sun. The findings suggest that most of the star-forming complexes in this vicinity are located on the surface of the Local Bubble, and their young stars show outward expansion mainly perpendicular to the bubble's surface. The study also supports the idea that the Local Bubble originated from a burst of stellar birth and death approximately 14 million years ago.

The eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) X-ray catalogue

H. Brunner et al.

Summary: This study verifies the capability of eROSITA to perform large-area uniform surveys through scanning observations of the eFEDS field. It also provides a test and training dataset for calibration and data analysis procedures. Additionally, it constitutes the largest contiguous soft X-ray survey at this depth to date, supporting a range of early eROSITA survey science investigations.

The Solar Cycle Temporal Variation of the Solar Wind Charge Exchange X-Ray Lines

Zhijie Qu et al.

Summary: Solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) is the main contamination of soft X-ray emission lines from the Milky Way's hot gas. The observations show a temporal variation in the O VII and O VIII emission line measurements that is correlated with the solar cycle traced by the sunspot number (SSN). Higher solar wind fluxes lead to higher O VII or O VIII fluxes, indicating magnetospheric SWCX. An empirical model was constructed to reproduce the correlation between the line measurements and solar activity, revealing a time lag of 0.91(-0.22)(+0.20) yr between the O VII flux and the SSN.

Intermediate- and high-velocity clouds in the Milky Way - I. Covering factors and vertical heights

Nicolas Lehner et al.

Summary: Intermediate- and high-velocity clouds (IVCs, HVCs) are potential sources of fuel for star formation in the Milky Way. IVCs are found to be mostly confined to vertical bar z vertical bar less than or similar to 1.5 kpc, while HVCs are detected at higher distances from the Galactic plane. These clouds, with their high covering factors, could serve as important gas reservoirs to sustain star formation in the MW.

The eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) X-ray emission around star-forming and quiescent galaxies at 0.05 < z < 0.3

Johan Comparat et al.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the hot phase of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using recent soft-X-ray observations. Different X-ray profiles were observed for quiescent and star-forming galaxies. While there is consistency between numerical simulations and observational data on large scales, discrepancies exist on small scales.

The eROSITA X-ray telescope on SRG

P. Predehl et al.

Summary: eROSITA is the primary instrument on the SRG mission, conducting a comprehensive all-sky survey to study the large-scale structure of the universe, including galaxy clusters and Dark Energy. The survey is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the evolution of supermassive black holes and provide new insights into various astrophysical phenomena. Early observations confirm that the instrument's performance meets its scientific promise.

The Galactic center chimneys: the base of the multiphase outflow of the Milky Way

G. Ponti et al.

Summary: Multiwavelength observations indicate that the chimneys act as a channel connecting the continuous but intermittent activity at the GC with the Fermi bubbles. The prominent edges and shocks in the radio and mid-infrared bands suggest powerful recent outflows from the Milky Way's central parsecs. The data supports the presence of a vertical magnetic field and raises the possibility that the chimneys represent a relic of past and more powerful activity.

X-ray bubbles in the circumgalactic medium of TNG50 Milky Way- and M31-like galaxies: signposts of supermassive black hole activity

Annalisa Pillepich et al.

Summary: The TNG50 cosmological simulation reveals X-ray emitting bubbles, shells, and cavities in Milky Way- and Andromeda-like galaxies, resembling features of the eROSITA and Fermi bubbles seen in the Galaxy. These galaxies often display large-scale coherent features of overpressurized gas that impinge into the gaseous halo, with gas outflows reaching speeds of 100-1500 km/s and temperatures between 10^6.4-7.2 K enriched with metallicities of 0.5 - 2 times that of the Sun. The bubbles are believed to be a result of episodic wind-like energy injections from supermassive black holes at the galaxy centers accreting at low Eddington ratios, and are expected to be common in disc-like galaxies prior to being quenched, potentially detectable by instruments like eROSITA in the local Universe.

The Hot Circumgalactic Medium of the Milky Way: Evidence for Supervirial, Virial, and Subvirial Temperatures; Nonsolar Chemical Composition; and Nonthermal Line Broadening

Sanskriti Das et al.

Summary: This study presents the simultaneous detection and characterization of three distinct phases at >10(5) K in the Milky Way circumgalactic medium, providing insights on the thermal and chemical history of the galaxy CGM and theories of galaxy evolution. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra allowed the detection of a hot phase, a warm-hot phase, and a warm phase, each with different temperatures and chemical compositions. Results suggest that the >10(5) K CGM is a complex ecosystem, with nonthermal line broadening evident in the warm-hot and hot phases.
