exp: N-body integration using basis function expansions

Michael S. Petersen et al.

Summary: This article presents the N-body simulation techniques implemented in the exp code, which uses empirically chosen basis functions to expand the potential field of a ensemble of particles. The research finds that the method can accurately expand highly non-spherical objects and achieves comparable or even better accuracy than direct-summation or tree-based calculations, while being computationally less intensive.

Tidally stripped halo stars from the Large Magellanic Cloud in the Galactic North

Michael S. Petersen et al.

Summary: This study examines the interaction between the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and finds that the LMC is currently losing its stellar halo due to tidal forces from the Milky Way. The study presents an N-body model that predicts a stream of stars stripped from the LMC, and proposes a strategy to search for this stripped material in kinematic space using RR Lyrae stars as tracers. By analyzing RR Lyrae stars with Gaia EDR3 astrometry, the study reveals that the LMC stellar halo extends at least out to approximately 30º from the galactic center in the Southern Galactic hemisphere, and identifies several leading arm candidates in the Northern hemisphere up to a height of b = +34º (68º from the LMC).

Detection of the Milky Way reflex motion due to the Large Magellanic Cloud infall

Michael S. Petersen et al.

Summary: The Large Magellanic Cloud is the most massive satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and its infall causes the Milky Way disk to move. The dynamical models of our Galaxy need to take into account this effect.

Detection of the LMC-induced sloshing of the Galactic halo

Denis Erkal et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud may have a massive halo, leading to an acceleration of the inner Milky Way and significant effects on our Galaxy. Through simulations and observations, it was found that the stars in the Southern hemisphere are blueshifted while those in the North are redshifted, consistent with the expected acceleration of the inner halo due to the LMC.
