The EXPRES Stellar Signals Project II. State of the Field in Disentangling Photospheric Velocities

Lily L. Zhao et al.

Summary: This study compares 22 different methods for extreme-precision radial-velocity (EPRV) exoplanet detection using the same data from the Extreme-precision Spectrograph (EXPRES) Stellar Signals Project (ESSP). The results show that no method consistently reduces the radial-velocity root-mean-square (RV rms) to sub-meter-per-second levels, and there is a lack of agreement between the results returned by different methods. The study suggests that further progress in this field requires increased interpretability of methods, high-cadence data, and more advanced metrics for method performance.

HADES RV Programme with HARPS-N at TNG XV. Planetary occurrence rates around early-M dwarfs

M. Pinamonti et al.

Summary: This paper presents a complete Bayesian statistical analysis of the HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey (HADES), which monitored the radial velocities of M dwarfs to study the occurrence rate of small-mass planets around these stars. The results show that the frequency of low-mass planets is highest for early-M dwarfs and that the occurrence rates of long-period giant planets and temperate planets inside the habitable zone are relatively low. This study highlights the importance of stellar mass in the formation and evolution of planetary systems.

The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs Benchmarking the impact of activity in high-precision radial velocity measurements

S. V. Jeffers et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of stellar activity on high-precision RV measurements using observations of the active M3.5 dwarf EV Lac. The results show a significant correlation between the centre-of-light and the chromatic index, as well as circular closed-loop relations between activity indices and RV. By removing the spot-induced RV component, the planet-mass sensitivity is improved by at least three times.

Quasi-periodic Gaussian processes for stellar activity: From physical to kernel parameters

B. A. Nicholson et al.

Summary: In this paper, the reliability of interpreting the hyperparameters of Gaussian Process (GP) regression in terms of physical properties of spotted stars is tested. Data simulated using a spot model is modeled using a quasi-periodic (QP) GP and quasi-periodic plus cosine (QPC) GP, and the posterior distributions of the GP hyperparameters are compared to the input parameters of the spot model. The study finds good agreement between the input stellar rotation period and the QP and QPC GP period, as well as between the spot decay time-scale and the length scale of the squared exponential term. The hyperparameters derived from light and radial velocity (RV) curves for a given star are also compared, showing good agreement.

The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs Stable radial-velocity variations at the rotation period of AD Leonis: A test case study of current limitations to treating stellar activity

D. Kossakowski et al.

Summary: This article investigates the nature of a periodic signal around the M3.0 V star AD Leo, exploring the use of RV data, activity indicators, and models to explain the observations. The results indicate that it is not possible to definitively prove the absence of a planet orbiting in synchronization with the stellar rotation.

Auto-correlation functions of astrophysical processes, and their relation to Gaussian processes: Application to radial velocities of different starspot configurations

M. Perger et al.

Summary: Considering the effects of stellar magnetic phenomena is crucial for maximizing the use of radial velocities obtained by modern exoplanet-hunting spectrometers. This study aims to establish a clear connection between stellar magnetic activity affecting RVs and their correlations with physical parameters. The newly proposed quasi-periodic with cosine (QPC) kernel leads to significantly better model likelihoods and can potentially improve the sensitivity of RV exoplanet searches.

Target Prioritization and Observing Strategies for the NEID Earth Twin Survey

Arvind F. Gupta et al.

Summary: NEID is a high-resolution optical spectrograph that will soon conduct the NEID Earth Twin Survey to explore the realm of Earth-mass exoplanets. It is challenging to separate the weak signals induced by low-mass, long-period exoplanets from stellar noise, except for the quietest host stars.

An ultra-short-period transiting super-Earth orbiting the M3 dwarf TOI-1685

P. Bluhm et al.

Summary: TOI-1685 b is the least dense ultra-short-period planet around an M dwarf known to date and one of the hottest transiting super-Earth planets with accurate dynamical mass measurements, making it particularly attractive for thermal emission spectroscopy. We also report with moderate evidence an additional non-transiting planet candidate in the system, TOI-1685 [c], with an orbital period of P-c = 9.02(-0.12)(+0.10) d.

Time-dependent properties of sunspot groups I. Lifetime and asymmetric evolution

Emese Forgacs-Dajka et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the time dependence of sunspot group areas using advanced statistical methods on a large sample spanning over 130 years. The results show that well-observed sunspot groups reaching at least 50 millionths of a solar hemisphere can be fitted surprisingly well with the model, indicating significant asymmetry between the growing and decaying phases. Additionally, a weak correlation was found between skew parameters and the maximum area of sunspot groups and their hemispherical latitude.

Evaluating Rotation Periods of M Dwarfs across the Ages

Mark Popinchalk et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers examined rotation rates of M dwarfs at different ages to establish benchmarks for M dwarf gyrochronology. They found that the transition from rapid to slow rotation in clusters depends on spectral type, with later spectral types transitioning at older ages. Evidence of rotation stalling for late M's in the field sample suggests that the transition happens much later for mid- to late-type M dwarfs.
