Revealing the Milky Way's most recent major merger with a Gaia EDR3 catalogue of machine-learned line-of-sight velocities

Adriana Dropulic et al.

Summary: Machine learning is used to infer missing line-of-sight velocities from astrometry in surveys like Gaia. The neural network applied to Gaia EDR3 predicts line-of-sight velocities and uncertainties for around 92 million stars using their parallax, angular coordinates, and proper motions. The network's uncertainty on velocity prediction is crucial for obtaining accurate stellar kinematic distributions. This work demonstrates the use of machine learning to exploit high-dimensional correlations for inferring line-of-sight velocities and provides a template for training and applying such a neural network when complete observational data is lacking.

Gas metallicity distributions in SDSS-IV MaNGA galaxies: what drives gradients and local trends?

N. Boardman et al.

Summary: The gas metallicity distributions across individual galaxies and galaxy samples can provide insights into galaxy evolution. There are negative metallicity gradients in massive galaxies and a tight correlation between mass and metallicity on local scales across a wide range of galaxy masses. The origins of these trends, however, are still elusive. This study uses data from SDSS-IV MaNGA to examine the dependence of gas metallicity on local stellar mass density and galactocentric radius within individual galaxies, and how the strengths of these dependencies vary across the mass-size plane.

Are Milky-Way-like galaxies like the Milky Way? A view from SDSS-IV/MaNGA

Shuang Zhou et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors compared the Milky Way with similar galaxies in terms of their star-formation and chemical evolution histories. They selected 138 Milky Way analogues and used a spectral fitting approach to compare their chemical properties. The results showed that some of the Milky Way analogues closely resembled the Milky Way in terms of age, metallicity, and alpha enhancement, while others had very different histories.

The Global Dynamical Atlas of the Milky Way Mergers: Constraints from Gaia EDR3-based Orbits of Globular Clusters, Stellar Streams, and Satellite Galaxies

Khyati Malhan et al.

Summary: We uncover the merging process of the Milky Way halo by detecting groupings of globular clusters, stellar streams, and satellite galaxies in action space. We find a total of 6 mergers, including a new one, and discover that the most-metal-poor streams are associated with one of the mergers.

Luminosity functions of globular clusters in five nearby spiral galaxies using HST/ACS images

Luis Lomeli-Nunez et al.

Summary: The study presents the luminosity function of globular clusters in five nearby spiral galaxies based on samples from Hubble Space Telescope mosaic images. The lognormal nature of the luminosity functions and the dependence of the turnover magnitude on Hubble type are noted. The radial density distribution of the clusters follows a Sersic function, with specific frequency after corrections.

How well do local relations predict gas-phase metallicity gradients? Results from SDSS-IV MaNGA

N. Boardman et al.

Summary: Gas-phase metallicity gradients provide clues to the formation histories of galaxies, and the most extended galaxies display steeper gradients. By examining local relations, we can qualitatively predict the gradient behavior on the mass-size plane, but there are some discrepant gradients that need to be explained by physical causes.

Age determination of galaxy merger remnant stars using asteroseismology

Camilla C. Borre et al.

Summary: By studying the ages of remnant stars, we can estimate the merger times of the Milky Way and gain a better understanding of its evolutionary history. Using data from multiple sources, we have successfully determined the ages of 21 red giant stars and classified eight of them as part of one of the largest merger events in the history of our Galaxy.

Calibration-based abundances in the interstellar gas of galaxies from slit and IFU spectra

L. S. Pilyugin et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors test the applicability of empirical R and S calibrations for abundance determinations in IFU spectra. The results show that the R calibration produces more consistent abundance estimations between slit and IFU spectra than the S calibration. It is also found that the same calibration can produce close estimations of the abundances using IFU spectra obtained with different spatial resolution and different spatial samplings.

A Direct Measurement of Galaxy Major and Minor Merger Rates and Stellar Mass Accretion Histories at Z < 3 Using Galaxy Pairs in the REFINE Survey

Christopher J. Conselice et al.

Summary: In this study, we measure the impact of major and minor mergers on the formation of stellar masses in galaxies over the redshift range 0 < z < 3. By analyzing a combination of the latest ground-based near-infrared imaging data, we find that major mergers contribute more to the growth of stellar mass in galaxies compared to minor mergers during this epoch. Overall, merging events will more than double the mass of massive galaxies over this period.

Bar effect on gas-phase abundance gradients. I. Data sample and chemical abundances

A. Zurita et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a decreased importance of galactic bars in affecting the radial metallicity profiles in spiral galaxies compared to results from the 1990s. This research has collected a large sample of HII region emission-line fluxes from 51 nearby galaxies to revisit the impact of bars on the radial metal distribution in spirals. The methodology used is homogeneous across the entire data sample and includes the analysis of chemical abundances, structural parameters of bars and discs, galactocentric distances, and radial abundance profiles.

On the radial abundance gradients of nitrogen and oxygen in the inner Galactic disc

K. Z. Arellano-Cordova et al.

Summary: This study presents optical spectra of nine Galactic H II regions observed with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescope and revises the distances of these objects using Gaia DR2 parallaxes. The radial gradients of O/H and N/H were found to be linear and constant within the observed Galactic distances of 4 to 8 kpc. Additionally, a flat relation between N/O and O/H was observed, which differs from other nearby spiral galaxies.

Summary: The study of 4636 galaxy pairs reveals significant SFR enhancements compared to single pairs, while the impact of Z is minimal. High-velocity dispersion and high multiplicity are factors leading to Z enhancements in minor pairs.

MaNGA galaxies with off-centered spots of enhanced gas velocity dispersion

L. S. Pilyugin et al.

Summary: Enhanced gas velocity dispersion spots in six galaxies are attributed to (minor) interactions with satellites, while in three galaxies, the spots are related to bright spots in the photometric B band. This suggests gas exchange between the galaxies and their satellites. The spectra within these spots are H II-region-like, indicating gas infall without appreciable shocks. In one galaxy, the enhanced sigma spot is associated with an off-centered active galactic nucleus-like radiation distribution, suggesting a different origin or characteristics of gas infall compared to other galaxies.

Constraining the Milky Way's ultraviolet-to-infrared SED with Gaussian process regression

Catherine E. Fielder et al.

Summary: Improving the knowledge of global Milky Way (MW) properties is crucial for understanding the broader galaxy population. By training Gaussian process regression (GPR) models on SDSS galaxies, photometric properties of the MW are estimated, resulting in a MW UV-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) consistent with local spirals with characteristics broadly similar to the MW. The MW is confirmed to lie in the green valley in optical diagnostic diagrams but is shown for the first time to be in the star-forming region in standard UV and IR diagnostics, similar to red spiral galaxies.
