The role of the chromospheric magnetic canopy in the formation of a sunspot penumbra

P. Lindner et al.

Summary: The study investigates the existence of a chromospheric canopy as a necessary condition for the formation of a penumbra and the origin of inclined magnetic fields. Spectropolarimetric observations and imaging data analysis reveal that the presence of a chromospheric canopy is crucial for penumbra formation, but inclined fields in the chromosphere do not influence the inclined fields in the photosphere.

Granular-scale Magnetic Flux Emergence and its Associated Features in an Emerging Active Region

Jinhua Shen et al.

Summary: This study used high-resolution solar observations to investigate the granular-scale magnetic flux emergence occurring in an emerging active region. The research found that the emergence of different magnetic fluxes exhibits distinct features, with some leading to eruptions and others associated with bright points and arch filament systems.

Solar Jets: SDO and IRIS Observations in the Perspective of New MHD Simulations

Brigitte Schmieder

Summary: Solar jets are collimated plasma beams observed at various temperatures and wavelengths. They transport energy and contribute to the heating of the corona and acceleration of the solar wind. The initiation mechanism of jets is still debated, but recent studies using coordinated observations and numerical simulations have provided insights into their triggers and relationship with cool surges.

Spatio-temporal analysis of chromospheric heating in a plage region

R. Morosin et al.

Summary: In this study, we used a multi-line high-spatial-resolution plage dataset to estimate the chromospheric heating terms and characterize their distribution. Our results show that Ca II lines contribute dominantly to the lower chromosphere, while H I is dominant in the upper chromosphere. Additionally, our time analysis reveals a periodic variation in the net radiative losses. Based on our findings, we propose that Ohmic current dissipation explains the observed distribution in the lower chromosphere, while acoustic wave heating may be responsible for one-third of the energy deposition in the upper chromosphere.

An observationally constrained model of strong magnetic reconnection in the solar chromosphere: Atmospheric stratification and estimates of heating rates

C. J. Diaz Baso et al.

Summary: The study investigates the heating caused by a strong reconnection event triggered by magnetic flux cancellation. Using imaging and spectropolarimetric data, a three-dimensional model was obtained, showing the emergence of magnetic loops, increase in chromospheric temperature, bidirectional flows, and ejected plasmoids. The chromospheric radiative losses at the reconnection site provide quantitative constraints for theoretical models simulating reconnection events in the chromosphere.

Penumbral decay observed in active region NOAA12585

M. Murabito et al.

Summary: The study found that the penumbra disappeared progressively in time and space, with the evolution of magnetic flux seeming to be linked to the presence of moving magnetic features (MMFs). Decreasing Stokes V signals were observed, and Evershed flows and horizontal fields were detected even after the disappearance of the penumbral sector.

Design and Performance Analysis of a Highly Efficient Polychromatic Full Stokes Polarization Modulator for the CRISP Imaging Spectrometer

A. G. de Wijn et al.

Summary: The paper presents the design and performance of a polychromatic polarization modulator for the CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter at the Swedish 1 m Solar Telescope. The trade-offs and procedures discussed in the paper are generally applicable in the development of broadband polarization modulators. The modulator has been operational since 2015, with measured performance close to optimal and differences between design and as-built modulator largely understood.
