Kepler-167e as a Probe of the Formation Histories of Cold Giants with Inner Super-Earths

Yayaati Chachan et al.

Summary: The correlation between outer giant planets and inner super-Earths has important implications for planet formation theories. The study focuses on the Kepler-167 system, which is unique in containing both inner transiting super-Earths and a confirmed outer transiting gas giant companion. The mass of the gas giant Kepler-167e is measured using radial velocity monitoring, confirming it as a Jupiter analog. The study explores how systems like Kepler-167 form in the pebble accretion framework and finds that more massive and metal-rich disks can also deliver enough solids to form systems of super-Earths.

Summary: The census of known exoplanets reveals a range of densities, but planets orbiting a common star show remarkable uniformity in density. However, the HIP 41378 system features a super-puff planet with significantly different density compared to other planets. This paper investigates the change in densities of the planets in the HIP 41378 system over time, as well as the possible core mass range and the existence of planetary rings as an explanation for the observed low density of one planet.

The Intrinsic Multiplicity Distribution of Exoplanets Revealed from the Radial Velocity Method

Wei Zhu

Summary: Planet multiplicities in Sun-like star systems were studied using a general method that considered survey incompleteness. The results showed that about 21% of Sun-like stars had planets with masses above 10 M (circle plus) (0.3 M (J)), with around 30% of them being multiplanet systems. The study also found that about 33% of Sun-like stars contained planets with a radial velocity semi-amplitude K greater than 1 m s(-1) (3 m s(-1)), and each system hosted an average of 1.8 planets. Furthermore, the hot Jupiter rate in the surveyed sample was higher than the consensus value by a factor of about three, and a correlation between inner and outer planets was confirmed.

Interpreting the Atmospheric Composition of Exoplanets: Sensitivity to Planet Formation Assumptions

Summary: Constraining planet formation based on atmospheric composition is a fundamental goal. This study summarizes the complexities of planet formation models and introduces a methodology to investigate the relationship between atmospheric compositions and planet formation. Applying this framework to HR 8799e, it is suggested that this planet may have undergone significant migration during its formation, and some tested setups result in low atmospheric metallicities.

Summary: This study uses a high-precision radial velocity survey to investigate the occurrence of two types of planets around FGKM stars. It finds that stars with close-in small planets are more likely to have outer giant planets, while stars with distant giant planets are more likely to have inner small planets. Massive and close-in giant planets are found to be unrelated to small inner planets. Additionally, stars hosting both small planets and gas giants are found to have higher metallicity than stars with only small planets.

Chemical evolution in planet-forming regions with growing grains

Christian Eistrup et al.

Summary: This study aims to model the compositional evolution of volatile ices on grains of different sizes, considering time-dependent grain growth and multiple constant grain sizes. The results show that grain growth reduces the available grain-surface area for ice-phase reactions, leading to a decrease in reaction efficiency. Larger grain sizes have a smaller impact on the change in C/O ratio in the gas phase. Choosing a constant grain size from a grain evolution model may be an appropriate simplification when studying the impact of grain growth on chemical evolution.

The mass-radius relation of intermediate-mass planets outlined by hydrodynamic escape and thermal evolution

D. Kubyshkina et al.

Summary: The study uses planetary evolution modeling to simulate 199 smaller exoplanets and finds that atmospheric escape and planetary structure play a significant role in explaining the observed radius distribution. For smaller mass planets, atmospheric escape and the evolution of the host star's activity level have a greater impact on the planetary characteristics. For larger mass planets, the parameters at formation are the dominant factor. In general, the intrinsic differences in the evolution of the host star's activity can explain only a quarter of the observed radius spread.

This study investigates the properties of these planet species formed through core accretion, and finds that a joint occurrence of the two planet types requires intermediate solid reservoirs in the protoplanetary disk. Differences in volatile content in planets of different system architectures were also noted, with a prediction that high-density super-Earths are more likely to host an outer giant.
