Culturally tailored substance use interventions for Indigenous people of North America: a systematic review

Summary: The purpose of this systematic review is to examine culturally tailored interventions for alcohol and drug use in Indigenous adults in North America. The findings suggest that there is a significant substance use issue among Indigenous communities, but few individuals participate in treatment. The results highlight the importance of increased research investment in culturally tailored treatment for Indigenous populations.

Summary: This review provides recent findings on prevalence, risk factors, outcomes, and prevention and intervention for suicide during pregnancy and the first year postpartum. Standardized definitions and improved identification of maternal deaths have helped in identifying perinatal suicide and risk factors more accurately. Reports suggesting a protective effect of pregnancy and postpartum on suicide risk may be overestimated. Clinicians need to be vigilant for suicide risk among perinatal patients, especially those with mental health diagnoses or prior suicide attempts. Universal screening for suicide as part of depression and anxiety assessment, along with improved access to mental health treatments, can reduce the risk of perinatal suicide.

Factors such as self-determination and connection to culture and community-controlled organizations are crucial for increasing Aboriginal resilience and resistance, and improving health and wellbeing outcomes. Further research is needed to develop an Indigenous-led evidence-base and understand the causal pathways of cultural determinants of health.
