Optimization of different application methods of multi-facial bacterial and fungal antagonists against sheath blight pathogen of rice, Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IA

Ziaul Haque et al.

Summary: The relative effectiveness of seven different application methods of five native bacterial and fungal biocontrol agents (BCAs) and one fungicide was evaluated against Rhizoctonia solani on rice cultivar Pusa Sugandha-5. The combination of soil application and foliar application was found to be the most effective treatment in reducing disease severity and promoting plant growth and yield enhancement.

The potential of bacteriophages to control Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris at different stages of disease development

Dominique Holtappels et al.

Summary: Specific bacteriophages were found to effectively recognize polysaccharides that affect bacterial cell walls, potentially providing a solution for controlling black rot disease in Brassica crops. An irrigation-based application showed promising results in a series of experiments. A phage cocktail formulated with calcium chloride successfully controlled the outbreak of the pathogen in open fields.

Xanthomonas bacteriophages: a review of their biology and biocontrol applications in agriculture

Ritah Nakayinga et al.

Summary: Phytopathogenic bacteria, particularly the genus Xanthomonas, have significant economic impact due to their effects on crop yields and livelihoods of farmers worldwide. Bacteriophage biocontrol has shown promising results for managing plant diseases caused by Xanthomonas, offering a potential sustainable and safe solution. Thorough understanding of Xanthomonas phages is crucial for developing effective biocontrol products.

Genome-Wide Association Study Dissects Resistance Loci against Bacterial Blight in a Diverse Rice Panel from the 3000 Rice Genomes Project

Jialing Lu et al.

Summary: Bacterial blight (BB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is a devastating bacterial disease of rice in temperate and tropical regions. Breeding and deployment of resistant cultivars carrying major resistance (R) genes has been effective for BB management, but new strains that can overcome resistance emerge rapidly. This study identified 11 QTL associated with BB resistance, including 3 putative novel loci, through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a diverse panel of 340 accessions from the 3000 Rice Genomes Project. Linear regression analysis showed a dependence of BB lesion length on the number of favorable alleles, suggesting pyramiding QTL using marker-assisted selection would be an effective approach for improving resistance.
