Combined insertion of basic and non-basic amino acids at hemagglutinin cleavage site of highly pathogenic H7N9 virus promotes replication and pathogenicity in chickens and mice

Aobaixue Zhou et al.

Summary: Since mid-2016, the low pathogenic H7N9 influenza virus in China has evolved into a highly pathogenic phenotype, causing concerns in public health and poultry industry. The changes in the hemagglutinin cleavage site (HACS) of the virus and its implications are still not fully understood.

Pathobiological Origins and Evolutionary History of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses

Dong-Hun Lee et al.

Summary: Over the past 60 years, 42 natural, independent H5 and H7 low-pathogenic avian influenza virus conversion events to highly pathogenic viruses have occurred in Europe, North America, Oceania, Asia, Africa, and South America. While most outbreaks were limited and eradicated, some outbreaks caused by H5Nx, H7N3, and H7N9 viruses continue to persist. Active surveillance and molecular detection efforts are crucial for early detection and eradication of these viruses in domestic birds.

The Pathobiology of H7N3 Low and High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza Viruses from the United States Outbreak in 2020 Differs between Turkeys and Chickens

Miria F. Criado et al.

Summary: The study found that the H7N3 HPAIV had high infectivity and pathogenicity in turkeys, while its transmission and infectivity in chickens were lower. On the other hand, the H7N3 LPAIVs showed higher infectivity and transmissibility in turkeys compared to chickens, requiring higher virus doses to infect the latter.
