Knockdown of ecdysteroid synthesis genes results in impaired molting and high mortality in Bactericera cockerelli (Hemiptera: Triozidae)

Jorge R. Paredes-Montero et al.

Summary: RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) was used to target three key genes in the potato psyllid and achieved significant mortality. Knockdown of the D24 target resulted in the highest mortality, while knockdown of ATF4 did not result in mortality. Combined delivery of dsRNAs was more effective than individual delivery, with targets involved in the same or interacting pathways showing the highest knockdown. The incomplete ecdysis and mortality observed in this study provide useful insights for biopesticide development.

RNAi as a Foliar Spray: Efficiency and Challenges to Field Applications

Bao Tram L. Hoang et al.

Summary: RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful tool utilized for crop protection, with spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) being a non-transgenic approach that relies on double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) for inducing RNAi. However, challenges in efficiency arise in plants and insects, where mechanisms of dsRNA uptake and movement through plant tissues need to be thoroughly investigated for effective delivery.

Knockdown of hexokinase in Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) by RNAi inhibits chitin synthesis and leads to abnormal phenotypes

Shan Yang et al.

Summary: This study successfully targeted and silenced hexokinase gene in the Asian citrus psyllid using RNAi technology, resulting in impaired chitin synthesis, insect mortality, and abnormal phenotypes. These findings support the potential of using HK genes as a new target for citrus pest control.

Effectiveness of orally-delivered double-stranded RNA on gene silencing in the stinkbug Plautia stali

Yudai Nishide et al.

Summary: The brown-winged green stinkbug, Plautia stali, shows high sensitivity to RNAi with injected dsRNA but very low sensitivity to RNAi with orally-delivered dsRNA, in contrast to other allied pest stinkbugs. This highlights the varied sensitivity to RNAi across different species and limits the applicability of the molecular tool for controlling this specific insect pest.
