The Stressful Personality: A Meta-Analytical Review of the Relation Between Personality and Stress

Jing Luo et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the associations between the Big Five personality traits and stress, finding that neuroticism was positively related to stress while extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness were negatively related. The association between facets of conscientiousness and performance-based and informant-rated cognition, affect, and activities in older adults

Angelina R. Sutin et al.

Summary: The study found that conscientiousness traits such as responsibility and industriousness were associated with better cognitive performance, while orderliness was linked to less cognitive decline. These traits were also related to more positive affect, less negative affect, and greater engagement in cognitive and outdoor activities.

Personality Associations With Amyloid and Tau: Results From the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging and Meta-analysis

Antonio Terracciano et al.

Summary: This study explores the association between personality traits and neuropathology in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The findings suggest that higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness are associated with more amyloid and tau pathology. These associations are stronger in cognitively normal individuals and not influenced by neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Five-factor model personality traits and grip strength: Meta-analysis of seven studies

Yannick Stephan et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between Five-Factor Model personality traits and grip strength. Higher neuroticism is related to lower grip strength, while higher extraversion, openness, and conscientiousness are associated with higher grip strength. Depressive symptoms mediate the association with neuroticism, while depressive symptoms and physical activity partly mediate the associations with extraversion, openness, and conscientiousness. Lower CRP partly mediates the association with conscientiousness. Sex and age moderate the associations, with stronger associations among males and younger individuals. Overall, higher neuroticism is a risk factor for low grip strength, while high extraversion, openness, and conscientiousness may be protective.

Summary: There is a correlation between grip strength and cognitive impairment, with lower grip strength associated with increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Individuals with poorer grip strength have varying risks of developing dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and non-Alzheimer's dementia.

Is personality associated with dementia risk? A meta-analytic investigation

Damaris Aschwanden et al.

Summary: This study provides a quantitative synthesis of the prospective associations between personality traits and the risk of incident Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness were associated with increased dementia risk, while lower extraversion, openness, and agreeableness showed less robust associations.

A coordinated analysis of the associations among personality traits, cognitive decline, and dementia in older adulthood

Eileen K. Graham et al.

Summary: Individual differences in rates of cognitive decline in later adulthood may be influenced by personality traits. Low neuroticism and high openness were found to be associated with total cognitive function. The study also identified differences in cognitive decline trajectories before and after dementia diagnosis, with openness being linked to decline post-diagnosis.

Neuroticism predicts informant reported cognitive problems through health behaviors

Rachel D. Best et al.

Summary: This study found that neuroticism can predict cognitive problems through wellness maintenance, while other personality traits such as conscientiousness showed no significant association with cognitive problems. Health behaviors, specifically wellness maintenance, were highlighted as important factors influencing the relationship between neuroticism and cognitive problems.

Engagement in Cognitively Stimulating Activities Mediates the Relationship between Openness and Attention/Executive Functions, but Not Memory in Older Adults

Giulia Mercuri et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between openness and attention/executive functions in healthy older adults, but not with verbal memory. Additionally, cognitive stimulating activities partially mediated the relationship between openness and attention/executive functions, but not with verbal memory.
