Inter-laboratory validation of an ISO test method for measuring enzyme activities in soil samples using colorimetric substrates

Nathalie Cheviron et al.

Summary: The evaluation of soil quality requires robust methods to assess biologically based indicators, with enzyme activities being a key indicator. By standardizing methods through ISO, enzyme activities can be measured in different types of soils, yielding consistent results.

Food waste anaerobic biogas slurry as fertilizer: Potential salinization on different soil layer and effect on rhizobacteria community

Xingyao Meng et al.

Summary: The study found that appropriate concentrations of biogas slurry are not harmful to soil and plants, and can even promote crop growth. However, high concentrations of biogas slurry can inhibit seed germination and root elongation, potentially leading to salt accumulation in the soil with long-term application. Correlation analysis identified Cl- as the main factor contributing to high electrical conductivity in all soil layers, and specific bacteria as indicators of potential environmental hazards from biogas slurry salinity.

Fluoroquinolone-contaminated poultry litter strongly affects earthworms as verified through lethal and sub-lethal evaluations

Claudio E. T. Parente et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant effects of contaminated poultry litter on earthworms, including avoidance, biomass loss, lethality, reproductive impacts, and changes to immune cells. Investigations showed that poultry litter strongly repels earthworms even at the lowest concentration.

Heavy Metals and Pesticides Toxicity in Agricultural Soil and Plants: Ecological Risks and Human Health Implications

Ahmed Alengebawy et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the toxic effects of heavy metals and pesticides on the agricultural ecosystem and human health, including accumulation, mechanism of action, and transmission pathways. The impact on soil and plants, as well as related diseases, were discussed. Additionally, the synergistic and antagonistic interactions between heavy metals and pesticides and their combined toxic effects were examined.

Medium-term effects of Ag supplied directly or via sewage sludge to an agricultural soil on Eisenia fetida earthworm and soil microbial communities

Pauline Courtois et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of direct exposure to AgNPs or indirect exposure via sewage sludge contaminated with AgNPs on earthworms and soil microbial communities. Results showed that direct exposure to AgNPs led to a decrease in potential carbon respiration in the soil, while the addition of sewage sludge had a greater impact on soil microbial diversity. The formation of Ag sulfides in sewage sludge reduced the impact of AgNPs on earthworms and soil microorganisms compared to direct addition.
