The plane wave finite element method for the wave scattering by a 2-D phononic crystal

Jian-Fei Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a plane wave finite element method for 2D phononic crystals under elastic waves is proposed. FE equations for each plane wave are established using the virtual work principle and conventional finite element procedure. By synthesizing contributions from all plane waves via the DFT method, the dynamic response of the phononic crystal layer to incident waves is determined.

Full-Gradient Optimization of the Vibroacoustic Performance of (Non-)auxetic Sandwich Panels

Ali Hosseinkhani et al.

Summary: This paper optimizes the vibro-acoustic response of (non-) auxetic sandwich panels with re-entrant hexagonal honeycomb cores through topology optimization method, reducing noise and lowering sound power level while shifting structural vibration frequencies to lower values desired in industries such as aerospace. The results show that the proposed optimization approach provides additional noise reduction for auxetic sandwich panels compared to existing literature results.

Emad Panahi et al.

Summary: The study examines the elastic wave dispersion characteristics of a new circular-maze-shaped (CMS) phononic crystal and optimizes the geometry parameters of the unit cell to achieve multiple, broad, and mutable bandgaps. The novel architected phononic crystal with its unique CMS scheme is found to provide significant attenuation of elastic wave transmission through a developed meta-plate structure.

Natural property and vibration suppression of fluid-conveying phononic crystal pipes with axial periodic composites based on Timoshenko beam model

Feng Liang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the free vibration and band gap characteristics of a fluid-conveying phononic crystal pipe composed of periodically varying materials. Parametric studies are conducted to analyze the effects of substructure properties and fluid-structure interaction on the pipe's performance. The spectral element method is shown to be a more efficient approach in dealing with the characteristics of the pipe.

Phononic Band Gap and Free Vibration Analysis of Fluid-Conveying Pipes with Periodically Varying Cross-Section

Hao Yu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the vibration suppression performance and natural properties of fluid-conveying pipes with periodically varying cross-sections. The flexural wave equation for substructure pipes is established based on the classical beam model and traveling wave property, and the spectral element method is used for semi-analytical solutions. The paper reveals that the band gap of the pipe system is induced by geometrical differences in the substructure cross-section, and the number of cells does not contribute to the band gap region but has significant effects on amplitude attenuation, natural frequencies, and mode shapes. The impact of fluid-structure interaction is more evident in pipes with smaller numbers of cells, and the spectral element method is shown to be more effective than the transfer matrix method for analyzing the characteristics of band gap and free vibration of dynamical structures in phononic crystals.

Novel cross shape phononic crystals with broadband vibration wave attenuation characteristic: Design, modeling and testing

Emad Panahi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the elastic wave dispersion characteristics of two novel unit-cells through numerical and experimental methods, showing that they have a wide phononic bandgap coverage factor and the location of bandgaps can be tuned by modifying the topology of unit-cells. The results of the numerical and experimental models match perfectly, demonstrating the practical application of these new phononic crystals as a frequency tool to stop the propagation of elastic waves.
