Bio-uptake, tissue distribution and metabolism of a neonicotinoid insecticide clothianidin in zebrafish

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the bio-uptake, tissue distribution, and metabolism of neonicotinoids in zebrafish, focusing on clothianidin. The results showed low bioaccumulation potential of CLO in zebrafish, with highest accumulation in intestine and liver, where N-demethylation and nitro-reduction were identified as metabolic pathways. Liver and intestine were found to play a key role in the metabolism and elimination of CLO.

Acute and chronic toxicity tests of systemic insecticides, four neonicotinoids and fipronil, using the tadpoles of the western clawed frog Silurana tropicalis

Masahiro Saka et al.

Summary: The study found that the neonicotinoids had low acute toxicity to amphibians, while fipronil was highly toxic. Exposure to different concentrations did not show significant effects. The insecticides alone do not directly affect amphibians at concentrations likely to occur in paddy water.

Interspecific sensitivity of European amphibians towards two pesticides and comparison to standard test species

Elena Adams et al.

Summary: The study found that native amphibian sensitivities to the tested pesticides differed by a factor of 5 and 11. Depending on the pesticide, the model organism X. laevis was five to nine times more tolerant than the most sensitive native amphibian species. Comparison of literature values of O. mykiss to the experimentally determined sensitivities of the native amphibian species showed similar sensitivity ranges for the formulation Folpan (R) 500 SC, but eight times lower sensitivity for the formulation Avaunt (R) EC.

Effects of two pesticides on northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) stress metrics: Blood cell profiles and corticosterone concentrations

Melody J. Gavel et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of long-term exposure to two individual neonicotinoids on northern leopard frog immune function. Results show that exposure to neonicotinoids can alter leukocyte profiles, indicative of a stress response. Future studies should further explore the impact of chronic exposure to neonicotinoids on amphibians' susceptibility to parasites and pathogens.
