Plastic Debris As a Vector for Bacterial Disease: An Interdisciplinary Systematic Review

Charlotte J. Beloe et al.

Summary: Pathogens and polymers can both cause diseases, and researchers are increasingly studying the potential of polymers to transfer pathogenic bacteria and cause disease in new environments. By integrating frameworks from ecology and epidemiology, the researchers reviewed 111 papers and found a lack of evidence for polymers as preferential vectors for bacterial colonization and disease transmission. There is a need for structured surveys and experiments to better understand the risks and impacts of pathogens on polymers.

Sorption and desorption kinetics of PFOS to pristine microplastic

Bettie Cormier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sorption processes of PFOS on PE microplastic particles and the desorption of PFOS from PE MPs under simulated digestive conditions. The results showed that smaller particles had higher PFOS concentrations sorbed onto PE and were also more easily desorbed. Prolonged exposure of PE MPs to PFOS led to higher concentrations adsorbed by PE MPs, increasing the risk of transferring relevant concentrations of PFOS during digestion.

Effects of microplastics alone or with sorbed oil compounds from the water accommodated fraction of a North Sea crude oil on marine mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Nagore Gonzalez-Soto et al.

Summary: The study revealed that both microplastics and oil compounds have deleterious effects on marine mussels at different levels of biological organization, including impacting enzyme activity, reproductive cells, and DNA damage.

Estimating global marine surface microplastic abundance: systematic literature review

Krzysztof Bohdan

Summary: This study conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate the abundance of microplastics (MP) in marine surface waters, and built datasets and maps based on the review. The results showed an estimated average of around 6300 MP per square kilometer in the surface of oceans. The study also identified drawbacks in MP research, including method heterogeneity and poor reporting practice, and proposed guidelines to improve research comparability in the future.

Effects of microplastics alone and with adsorbed benzo(a)pyrene on the gills proteome of Scrobicularia plana

M. J. Bebianno et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of low-density polyethylene microplastics on the gill proteome of the peppery furrow shell clam. The results suggest that microplastics can cause disturbance in cell structure and metabolism, increasing the toxicological risk for the clam. When microplastics are adsorbed with benzo[a]pyrene, more protein expression differentiation and apoptosis are observed, posing a higher threat to the health of the clam.

Microplastics in polar regions: An early warning to the world's pristine ecosystem

Amit K. Mishra et al.

Summary: The menace of plastic pollution in the oceans is a global problem, with microplastics presenting a threat to ecosystems and food webs. Scientific investigations have confirmed the presence of significant concentrations of microplastics in marine ecosystems globally, including the Polar Regions, and the situation is expected to worsen in the future.
