Fishmeal Replacement by Full-Fat and Defatted Hermetia illucens Prepupae Meal in the Diet of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata)

Ioannis T. Karapanagiotidis et al.

Summary: Insect proteins, particularly Hermetia illucens meal, have been identified as potential substitutes for fishmeal in aquafeeds. The lipid content and inclusion level of H. illucens meal have significant effects on feed consumption and palatability for fish. The defatted form of H. illucens meal is more suitable than the full-fat type for fishmeal replacement, with an optimal dietary level of approximately 81-104 g/kg for the highest feed intake, growth, unchanged proximate composition, and improved feed utilization by gilthead seabream.

Influence of Hermetia illucens Larvae Meal Dietary Inclusion on Growth Performance, Gut Histological Traits and Stress Parameters in Sparus aurata

Ambra Rita Di Rosa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of partially defatted Hermetia illucens meal on the growth performance, stress indicators, and gut histological traits of Sparus aurata. The results showed that the inclusion of insect meal did not affect growth performance or blood parameters, but at a 50% inclusion level, it caused morphometric and histopathological changes in the anterior gut tract. Among the diets, the 35% inclusion level was the most tolerated by fish.

Effect of dietary black soldier fly larvae meal on fatty acid composition of lipids and sn-2 position of triglycerides of marketable size gilthead sea bream fillets

Lina Pulido et al.

Summary: The study found that replacing fishmeal with insect meal in the feed significantly alters the fatty acid composition of fish fillets, leading to an increase in saturated fatty acids and a decrease in n-3 PUFA. However, this substitution did not affect the distribution of key fatty acids in the triglycerides, increasing the likelihood of better digestion and absorption by humans.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae Meal in the Diet of Gilthead Sea Bream: Effect on Chemical and Microbiological Quality of Filets

Marianna Oteri et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the chemical and microbiological characteristics of Sparus aurata filets fed with diets containing a partial replacement of fish meal with Hermetia illucens meal. The results showed that the replacement ratio did not significantly affect the chemical composition of the fish filets, but did affect the content of fatty acids and amino acids. The inclusion of Hermetia illucens meal in the diets did not influence the microbial profile of the fish.

Hermetia illucens and Poultry by-Product Meals as Alternatives to Plant Protein Sources in Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) Diet: A Multidisciplinary Study on Fish Gut Status

Basilio Randazzo et al.

Summary: The study showed that using poultry by-products and insect meal can successfully replace plant-derived ingredients in gilthead seabream diets, promoting healthy aquaculture practices. The results indicated improved zootechnical performances and gut health in fish fed with these alternative ingredients, highlighting the importance of finding sustainable ingredients for aquafeed formulations.

Physiological response of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to graded levels of Hermetia illucens or poultry by-product meals as single or combined substitute ingredients to dietary plant proteins

Basilio Randazzo et al.

Summary: The study found that moderate to high levels of HM and/or PBM in diets deprived of fish meal improved growth performance and reduced distal intestine morphological alterations in rainbow trout. Additionally, the mix of these animal proteins had the best overall response in terms of growth and gut/liver health. Both HM and PBM also downregulated the expression of inflammatory-related genes, with HM showing a greater effect, indicating a potential beneficial role of insect meal in trout diets.

Appetite Regulation, Growth Performances and Fish Quality Are Modulated by Alternative Dietary Protein Ingredients in Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) Culture

Lina Fernanda Pulido-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: In a world facing challenges from climate change and resource exploitation, the expansion of aquaculture poses the need for rethinking aquafeed formulations. This study compared the effects of different protein sources on the growth, gene expression, physical characteristics, and chemical composition of Sparus aurata, showing that certain alternative protein sources can effectively replace vegetable proteins without impairing fish growth. Further research is needed to better understand the impact of specific protein sources on fish farming sustainability.

Summary: The study highlights the effects of feeding dietary defatted black soldier fly larvae meal on the intestine microbiota, histomorphology, and oxidative enzyme activities in pikeperch. It shows that a diet containing up to 18% of the larvae meal can positively modulate the richness and diversity of intestinal microbiota.
