A pathway to improve seaweed aquaculture through microbiota manipulation

Jiasui Li et al.

Summary: Eukaryotic hosts rely on microbial communities for their proper functioning, and manipulating these microbiota through beneficial microorganisms can enhance host performance and health. Seaweed beneficial microorganisms have been found to promote seaweed growth and development, as well as improve disease resistance. This knowledge can be applied to improve seaweed aquaculture and restoration practices. The challenges and opportunities of using seaweed beneficial microorganisms in aquaculture are discussed.

Proteins extracted from seaweed Undaria pinnatifida and their potential uses as foods and nutraceuticals

Harshani Nadeeshani et al.

Summary: Isolation and utilization of seaweed proteins have become a novel trend globally due to the increasing demand for healthy non-animal proteins. The attention of scientific community is on the protein derived from seaweed Undaria pinnatifida for its high nutritional quality and bioactivity. The potential food applications of U. pinnatifida-derived proteins include nutritional components, food ingredients, alternative meat products, and animal feed, with various bioactivities such as antioxidant and antihypertensive effects.

A seaweed aquaculture imperative to meet global sustainability targets

Carlos M. Duarte et al.

Summary: Seaweed aquaculture, accounting for over half of global mariculture production, provides various ecosystem services and food/natural products for industries. It is seen as a versatile solution for climate change and biodiversity crisis. Scaling up seaweed aquaculture as an emission capture and utilization technology is crucial to support a circular bioeconomy and achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals for a growing global population by 2050.

Systematics, distribution, and sexual compatibility of six Scytosiphon species (Scytosiphonaceae, Phaeophyceae) from Japan and the description of four new species

Masakazu Hoshino et al.

Summary: The brown alga Scytosiphon lomentaria is a complex of multiple distinct species, in Japan, six species were detected in the S. lomentaria complex. While the taxonomic position and distribution of some species remain unclear, a new species was found in Okinawa Island. Pre-zygotic barriers have evolved among sympatric species due to reinforcement.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.
