Study on the contact and size of radial and flank leakage gaps of scrolls in a scroll compressor with CFD/CSM simulations

Che Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Computational Fluid Dynamics model of the scroll compressor is established to analyze the temperature and pressure loads on the scrolls. The deformation and contact behaviors of the scrolls are calculated using Computational Structural Mechanics. The results show the spatial and temporal variations of the leakage gaps, and the uneven deformation and contact hinder the further reduction of flank leakage gaps. However, the radial leakage gap can be compensated by gradually reducing the scroll height from outer to inner.

Unsteady and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics modelling of scroll expander for low-grade waste heat recovery transcritical carbon dioxide micro-scale power system

Yuheng Du et al.

Summary: Recent developments in renewable energy have sparked interest in utilizing low-grade heat (< 500 K), which is often wasted due to inefficient recovery technologies. The limited system size for low-grade heat recovery (< 50 kW) has prompted the exploration of CO2-based units as a potentially more efficient alternative to ORC. This study presents a thermodynamic and CFD analysis of a scroll expander in a micro-scale T-CO2 recovery system (< 10 kW), demonstrating its superior performance compared to traditional R123 ORC expanders.

Tangential leakage flow control with seal-grooves on the static scroll of a CO2 scroll compressor

Siyu Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a passive flow control method for tangential leakage in scroll compressors using continuous seal-grooves. Numerical methods were used to investigate the flow characteristics and the impacts of seal-groove parameters on compressor performance. The results suggest that appropriate seal-groove parameters can improve volumetric efficiency and isentropic efficiency.
