Experimental study on water collection performance of wire-to-plate electrostatic fog collector at various fog generation rates and fog flow velocities

M. J. Zeng et al.

Summary: Electrostatic fog collectors can help alleviate water scarcity by recovering water from fog in natural or industrial environments. This study proposes a wire-to-plate electrostatic fog collector and establishes an experimental test system to investigate its performance. The collection rate is influenced by fog generation rate, droplet size distribution and evaporation, as well as the collector's capacity. The collector's collection capacity is affected by voltage and fog flow velocity, with higher capacity achieved by increasing voltage or lowering fog velocity. The experimental results demonstrate a maximum collection efficiency of 60% under certain conditions, indicating the effectiveness of the designed electrostatic fog collector in water recovery.

Electrostatic fog collection mechanism and design of an electrostatic fog collector with nearly perfect fog collection efficiency

Yuan Jiang et al.

Summary: The corona discharge process in a wire-plate device under foggy condition is significantly influenced by charged microscale fog droplets in the air and macroscale droplets hanging on the electrodes. By designing a two-stage electrostatic fog collector with optimized electrode placement, a collection efficiency of over 90% can be achieved.

Fog Droplet Collection by Corona Discharge in a Needle-Cylinder Electrostatic Precipitator with a Water Cooling System

Hui Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, a needle-cylinder electrostatic precipitator with a water cooling system was designed to enhance the harvest of atmospheric water in wet flue gas. The effects of flow rate, temperature, and particles on the collection of fog droplets were investigated, and the energy efficiency of water collection was analyzed at different voltages. The results showed that the current decreased with increasing air relative humidity under the same voltage, while the breakdown voltage increased significantly. Increasing the residence time of fog droplets in the electric field by reducing the wet flue gas flow velocity improved the water collection efficiency. By decreasing the flue gas temperature and introducing particles in the wet gas, both the water collection rate and energy efficiency could be improved. However, with the increase of voltage, although the water collection rate increased, the energy efficiency decreased.

Corona discharge behavior in foggy environments with flat plate and fin plate electrodes

Xiaohong Yan et al.

Summary: This study experimentally measured the corona discharge phenomenon in two foggy environments and found that floating fog droplets can inhibit the corona discharge process, with the effect of fog droplets being more significant than humidity variation. The discharge current decreases with increasing fog concentration, and the electrohydrodynamic flow enhances the flow near the collection electrode and prevents large droplets from hanging on it.

The prediction of size and charge of particles formed from evaporation of charged droplets generated in an electrospray system

Hao Zhou et al.

Summary: Electrospray systems are used to generate submicrometer sized charged droplets containing solute or nanoparticles, which are then transformed into particles. A model for charged droplet drying was developed to predict the final size and charge of particles, considering processes such as solvent evaporation, diffusion, coagulation, and fission. The study investigates the influence of dimensionless parameters on particle size and charge, with an analytical solution obtained for slow drying conditions.

Excellent fog harvesting performance of liquid-infused nano-textured 3D frame

Wenle Pei et al.

Summary: The study designed a unique three-dimensional superhydrophobic liquid-infused frame inspired by cactus spines and pitcher plants, which effectively captures and accelerates the growth and transport of droplets. The presence of nanospines increases capillary force and locks the lubricant on the frame, achieving high fog harvesting rate and efficiency with excellent cycling stability for fog harvesting applications.
